Greed knows no religious or ethnic bounds.
The reasons why the "Jews" are high in the world of banking are many. I would offer this reason. During the middle ages and the early age of enlightenment, it was a sin according to the Catholic Church to prosper by lending money with interest (yes even the church saw this act as despicable).
Jews however were by in large, the first "money lenders". Much of the modern and medieval animosity towards these people is due to this. They average person saw the banker in a deceitful light (not much has changed). Ruled by greed and living in “sin”. (Think Scrooge)
Being the only money lenders for much of our early history gave them a lot of opportunity to pool wealth. Now that being said, many millions of them were fair honest workers who lived and died just like the rest of us.
It takes a special kind of person to be a banker elite, not having a religious community condemning your activity helps.

As for the role of the interest in our life - yes, it was prohibited by most of religeons, and not without reason, it was allowed by Judaism (towards jentiles) - and again not without reason. Just imagine that narcotraders manage to successfully lobby a law allowing narcotics to be sold on every corner. Impossible, isn't it? But I'm not so sure. Because we has a precedent, we see now interest being quite legitimate, while there are other forms of making economy running, without interest. How could it happen? I have some politically incorrect answer, conserning corruption of the rulers and some very determined effort.
So, the matter is much deeper than just a share of Jews in the banker elite and what consecuances it has.
Some time later I'll start a thread about alternatives for the financial system we have now.

I also heard that in Bad Old Days of yore, Jews were prohibited or restricted from owning/dealing with property in the form of real estate. As a low-status segment of many hierarchies throughout history, this left them by default with such socially distasteful -but economically required- professions as "moneychangers."

I'm glad I managed to give such a good opportunity for jewish festivity.
I just wonder if any Jew can really say something on the matter?
For example -
- Do you say all these bankers are not responsible?
- Do you say all these bankers are not Jews?
Yes, ability of Jews to start shouting as soon as their interests are affected is amazing, but it's not to surprize me, no need to even try. Better try to prove there's no connection between current economic crisis and Jewish bankers.
