I spent the last two months on a book tour of major Universities in the western States to promote my new text book. During that period I was rushed to no less than five hospitals for a possible heart attack. The total inconsistency of care was outrageous. Here are the conclusions of five cardiac units in five hospitals:
1). Drink water now. You have not had a heart attack. We are not running any tests. You need no treatment, but stay and rest here a few days.
2). You may have had a heart attack, but we are not sure. Here are prescriptions for four pills you should take.
3). We think you have had a mild heart attack. The Nuclear stress test is inconclusive. Forget the pills the other hospital gave you, and take ours.
4). Drink all the water you can. This visit to our ER ends now, your health care provider will not accept our $3,000 bill here in the middle of the night. Please leave the hospital.
5). Your coverage is good with us, so we have run every heart test know to mankind. Many EKGs, ultra-sound, stress test, two nuclear stress tests, and the ULTIMATE CAT where a wire is shoved through your vein into your heart to generate a picture. The result of these thousands of dollars of tests, "We are almost 100% sure, you did not have a heart attack."
In conclusion, what good does it do to have health coverage if these medical clowns don't know what they are doing? Doctor's should be tested regularly like we are for driver's license renewal. As a post script, I notified my health care provider not to pay any of these bastards. Let them sue me!

Let's go to motive. What do I have to gain from all these words? ObamaCare will either pass or it won't, and I am conceding that it will not do much good to have health coverage if health care is incompetent.
Do I hate the medical community? Well, after this I do not hold them in high esteem, but in all fairness they did spend a lot of time and effort to determine that my heart is in good shape. I have seen my heart in action, and I will live. I thank the medical community.
Am I recruiting for the Christian Scientist Church to get people to stop going to doctors? Actually, I do need to think about that more, but I have no axe to grind here.
So why am I spending hours of my free time writing all this down for people, whom I will probably never meet?
First, I learned something in all this. Medicine is not an exact thing, like rebuilding a carburator for your car. A carbarator can be precisely calibrated, human wellness is not the same.
Two, life is a really neat thing, if you do not take the time to enjoy some of it everyday, you are a fool. No one ever dies and wishes they had spent more time at the office.
Three, yes I did slam the medical community pretty hard, and play down the positives. I met a lot of very concerned hard working people during this ordeal. Somehow we have got to come up with some kind of medical standards that apply to all practicioners. We need to drive those who are only in it for a pay check out of medicine.
Fourth, I am still afraid of death, but not as much as I once was. Five hospitalizations for heart attack, and signing a surgery document that could mean the end of my life is scary. Life can end awful fast. I talked with serious heart patients, it can be an extremely painful way to go.
If you were going to buy a new car you would at least drive it around the block before buying it. Have you ever taken your health care provider out for a test run? Google "heart attack symptoms." Call 911 and see what happens. Find out what you are really getting for all that health coverage they take out of every pay check. Then, don't take my word for all this, (and it is all true down to the detail). DECIDE FOR YOURSELF! Don't just take the word of some Internet advertising writer.

I have 2 friends who are doctors, and they put the blame for the health care crisis squarely on the shoulders of doctors. I think there is more to it than that, but I definitely see your point.
The entire system needs to be reformed so that there is consistency and availability of care no matter where you are in this country. The reform needed will not be accomplished with Obama's plan, or anything else that could possibly be passed into law. The corporations (medical, big pharma, insurance companies) are all way too powerful to ever allow that to happen.

| Maybe it is different in other states, but here in New York State our doctors are required to take their medical board exam every ten years. This is also true for the RNs. Of course I've encountered doctors who seem a bit vague on procedures and diagnosis, but by and large, I've gotten some really good care by individuals who are very competent as well as good, caring individuals.

I'd like to see a larger variety of medical sources, more complementary and alternative medicine being included in a national health care program. Holistic, Chinese, and other alternatives. Lots of people respond better to holistic medicine then to "modern medicine"

I would be interested in hearing if anyone knows of any other States that require on-going testing for doctors to continue their practice.
Anyone interested in taking their health care coverage out for a test drive with a call to 911? Best to see what you have before you really need it!
