Former UNC President Bill Friday says Andy Griffith died this morning in Dare County. Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed that to WITN News.

Friday tells us the 86-year-old actor died at his Dare County home around 7:00 a.m. this morning.

He will be missed but thankfully his old shows continue to be aired. RIP Andy Griffith.

I was lucky enough to know him as a neighbor in NC. He was a good man who always had time for the community. Once when I was windsurfing I broke a mast in front of his house & landed in his back yard (not knowing who lived there). No police call, no body guards, he offered me iced tea, let me use his phone, and asked if i needed a ride somewhere. When a large supermarket chain opened a store next to the local grocer, Andy made adverts for the local business for free. I can't think of a local school or charity he didn't help at some point.

In an industry fraught with posers, crazies, and egos, he was the real deal: A kind, genuine down-home gentleman to the end.

RIP

I just watched him in Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd"

In addition to his great performance..I was also surprised to hear him sing some hardcore old school blues...if he had not done well as a actor..he could have been an important r&b/rock performer. I was struck by the raw and primal energy in his voice which kind of reminded me of Howlin' Wolf
