West Virginia's road to nowhere gets stimulus boost

By Drew Griffin and Steve Turnham CNN Special Investigations Unit

WARDENSVILLE, West Virginia (CNN) -- After more than 40 years and $1.5 billion, West Virginia's massive "Corridor H" project is getting another boost from the Obama administration's economic stimulus package, despite questions over whether the project will ever be completed.

The plan is to build a 100-mile, four-lane highway through the Appalachian Mountains, connecting West Virginia to the eastern seaboard. It has been receiving federal money for decades, largely due to Sen. Robert Byrd, the Democrat who has represented West Virginia in the Senate since 1958.

Acres burning in Randolph County

A wildfire is leaving behind acres of damage in Randolph County today in the Kelly Mountain Area.
Dozens of fire companies were working Tuesday afternoon to contain the flames that covered an estimated 100 acres, but even fire officials could not specifically determine the size of the blaze.  Reports from the Command Post, located near Route 33, indicate no homes are in danger.

Power of the Pen

Governor Joe Manchin has more than enough ink pens in hand to sign a bill into law that would pump new money into the state's community mental health system, but it remains to be seen if the governor will sign the bill.

Urban Peregrines move into the Wild at Grandview

The New River Gorge National River is in its fourth year of a five-year peregrine falcon reintroduction program -- one of the largest in the nation.
Since 2006, 62 young peregrines have been released in the Gorge. This year, a total of at least 15 more falcons will be set free here.

Once on the endangered species list, due mainly to the use of the insecticide DDT, which interfered with egg development, the peregrine falcon population has gradually rebounded, thanks mainly to a ban on DDT and reintroduction efforts. Off the endangered list since 1999, peregrines remain relatively rare in the East, particularly in natural settings.

Before being released in the Gorge, the birds receive dual color-coded leg bands to help observers identify them.

Vague Jobs-Plan in Clay has familiar Ring

Months before William Whitteker arrived in Clay County with a promise to hire 250 people and open a "global communications center," Whitteker tried unsuccessfully to start a business in Clendenin.
Whitteker courted potential investors, including William "Billy" Ore, who said he realized there was something fishy about the proposed project when Whitteker started talking about "pods and octagons and grids."
"It sounded almost like a science-fiction thing," recalled Ore, who owns Ore's Hardware in downtown Clendenin.

Dominion moving forward with Gas-processing Plant in Marshall County
Dominion said the Natrium plant is a response to the need for additional processing and fractionation capacity in the region. Dominion noted that the rising price of oil and the low price of natural gas have shifted drilling activity in the region to the shales that produce so-called "wet" natural gas that contains large amounts of propane, butane, methane and other products.
