Hamilton was a Federalist believing federal power should exceed that of the individual states; Jefferson was an Anti-Federalist, believing states should have sovereignty over themselves. A national bank would expand the power of the federal government, Jefferson did not want the government to get too powerful (and become as tyrannical as Britain). Thus, Liberal/Democrats are Hamiltonian; Conservative/Republicans are Jeffersonian.
