The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today said it is commencing an investigation into the accidental death Sept. 7 of a 12-year-old Detroit resident, when she came into contact with an electrified downed power line and was electrocuted.
In its order (Case No. U-18172), the MPSC directed DTE Electric Company (DTE) to conduct a full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the accident and file a report by Oct. 21. In addition, DTE officials will meet with MPSC staff to develop a plan as soon as possible for the utility to eliminate similar situations throughout the city of Detroit where there is a risk that abandoned lines could become energized by a line carrying electricity. The plan will address specific steps to be followed by DTE to protect the public between the discovery of a hazardous situation and resolution of that hazardous situation.
