Americans go to the polls on 8 November to elect the 45th US president. Here's what to watch out for as election night unfolds.
All 50 states and Washington DC will go to the polls across six different time zones on election day.
But it's not just winning the popular vote that counts. The US's complicated system is a race to secure 270 out of the 538 votes in the electoral college.
Most of the US will have to wait for polling stations to close - typically between 19:00 EST (24:00 GMT) and 20:00 EST (01:00 GMT) - for state projections.

may I ask Americans? A moment ago I heard on Russian TV that to vote in the US you may not even present your ID, though I didn't heard the whole report, it was just some American saying that in these elections there was unprecedented number of people who voted in advance and that you can vote even not having a passport with you. . And this presumably can lead to falsifications.
Well, I suppose it's just Putin's propaganda and therefore ask to comment, it just can't be true that a person can vote having no documents to identify himself.
Then he can vote multiple times in various places. In such a case no elections can be guaranteed from falsification.

You vote where your district is assigned to vote. You register when you move there and your vote is always cast in that polling place. They maintain a signature book that documents that you voted.
I've been registered in the same place for near forty years and I don't produce an ID when I vote. I did have to present one the first time.
You sign your voting roll and the signature is checked to see that it matches the book that has your signature from previous elections.
You won't have multiple registrations unless you have done so via fraud. That is rare because it isn't exactly easy to maintain more than one valid registration.
The poll workers can require ID, but I haven't been asked to produce one in a very long time. The signature acts as ID
As far as what ID will suffice for first time voters or challenged voters my State issued drivers license would be enough. Passport isn't necessary. Not everyone has a passport in the USA.

That's how it works for me.

The trick is to register to vote with a "cooperative" volunteer voter registrar who does not check any ID or citizenship....Then you vote by mail...No one has yet questioned that there are 89 registered voters living in my home...That is how it works for me...This technique has been made easier for illegal aliens to vote, as the ballots are in both English and Spanish...Also, President Obama promised illegal aliens they would not be checked for citizenship..............

Thanks! Though I have read a good article also, your system is weird and of course is extremely vulnerable to abuse and falsifucation. In 2 states you can vote only by mail. If you are not registered in advance you cannot vote. And so on and so on, generally saying - very, extremely weird and absurd system. Maybe the only thing which prevents massive falsification - that elections do not matter much at all, those who have real power keep it anyway and who of 2 puppets win doesn't matter much, as well there is real competition between 2 parties for even such a decorative post as the president. He doesn't decide that much. But even if we agree that there is no massive falsification - the system does not give the equial chance to vote for all.
Besides, how can it be that people register in advance for whom they will vote - for republicans or democrats? It is crazy? And if I change my mind? And lists of voters with their political inclines are accessible for all, political views of voters are not secret, anyone can press or buy voters. Very, very bad system.
And I don't expect any change in recent tensions between the US and Russia even after Putin's friend Trump :) wins.
