Lugo's election in 2008 broke the six-decade rule of the right-wing and was seen as part of the progressive wave of leaders elected throughout Latin America.

Paraguay's conservative government decided Wednesday to resort to the supreme court in a bid to have declared unconstitutional the presidential candidacy of Fernando Lugo, Paraguay's only progressive president ousted by a parliamentary coup in 2012.
