Suddenly, cons embrace the imperial presidency. |

The imperial presidency, a term first coined to describe the Nixon administration, ended with Tricky Dick giving the V-for-victory sign out the door of the helicopter taking him to exile and disgrace. Preventing a president with vast powers was perhaps the underlying objective of the Constitutional Convention. Every president since who has striven for vast powers has found that his reach exceeds his grasp and, more often than not, suffered painful setbacks. Mr. Trump will be no different and, personally, I rather doubt that he will even try. |

Technology has enabled a President to have a secret police without high personnel costs...I am more comfortable with Trump having that power rather than Hillary.....I am a good judge of character.............

We could be like Ireland, and have a Parliamentary Presidency, with a Prime Minister calling most of the shots and a Ceremonial President as an emergency-backup. |

We can hope that the house and the senate will hold Trump in check to some degree rather than let him go hog wild. Trump has an opportunity not enjoyed by a Republican President since 1928. |

I do notice something that is endemic to ingroup/outgroup bias as it applies to our left-right model When Bush made the Patriot act, lefties were all tripping about gubmint overeach and privacy while the cones were all like "if you gt nuthin' to hide, you aint got nuthin' to worry about Then Obama won and righties were And now the script has been flipped again. Hipster's Law concerning ingroup/outgroup behavior: "An ingroup will condemn an action by a rival outgroup while justifying the same act committed by one of their own" |

Pee wee, help me out here because I keep hearing that 1928 statement but GWB after the 2004 election had Republican control of the house and Senate. In fact the Senate majority was larger. Was 1928 the last time a first term president had majorities in both houses? Frankly, that would make it an almost useless statistic. Actually that complete control by one party in the 109th Congress led to some bad decisions and then the eventual backlash that gave us the 2008 election which flipped that paradigm. Suck it Up Buttercups. The hens have come home to roost for those who poo-poo'd the warnings of too much concentration of power within the executive branch. Short sighted Liberals here staunchly defended President Obama's unconstitutional non-recess recess appointments with little concern for the consequences we're facing now. Even today, with no consideration of the powers they would be handing to Trump and a Republican congress, desperate liberals are petitioning the White House to reinterpret the 'advise and consent' clause to mean congress has forfeited it's right to consent on SCOTUS appointments. |

Holding Trump "in check" has been the last gasp hope that his voters that held their noses used to justify their decision. No one has held him "in check" his whole life. No peewee, Congress will not hold Trump "in check" you bought that whole pig, not just the tenderloin. We are going to get the experience of an unchecked, unbleached Trump administration, backed by Congress and a SCOTUS whose tipping point is a Trump appointee. Don't be sad. It's what you wanted. "What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men." Captain, RP36 Ominous words. Edited by CautionaryTales, Nov 14 2016, 06:16 AM.

Fashy, I hope I am thrilled with Trump over the next four years. He is exactly what we need right now. Not for your reasons. He will be the giant dose of public Castor oil our society needs. I had a stomach virus yesterday. Cleaned me out pretty good. It'll be a lot like that. Edited by CautionaryTales, Nov 14 2016, 08:19 AM.
