The 1st amendment is under attack. Incorrect. The first amendment applies to government censorship, not editorial policy. Twitter, a private company, may publish or block whatever it wants.

Incorrect. The first amendment applies to government censorship, not editorial policy. Twitter, a private company, may publish or block whatever it wants. It's a utility; expect direct action by Steve Bannon to undo this repression.

Incorrect. The first amendment applies to government censorship, not editorial policy. Twitter, a private company, may publish or block whatever it wants. This is absolutely true - and competition exists. I think the the only reason conservatives and libertarians are still on Twitter is so they can troll the left.
Twitter should still be criticized for not branding itself as a left-wing safespace.

I'm sure the first German Jew who read "Mein kampf' thought "it's just words, let him spill his evil", or the speeches of Lenin ignored by the Russian nobility as a mere agitator soon forgotten.
Out West, they call my kind "prairie xxxxs". The alt right says they should be able to humiliate me like that in front of my children or grandchildren. I don't know what to tell them when that happens though, perhaps the alt-right believers here can give me some tips?
Its one thing for the alt-right to decry "political correctness" and "hate speech" as a tool of the Left. H4T, and clone say they are neither racist nor nazis, yet they use the same damn words that those who are professed racists and nazis.
Ironic that whites think they should be the ones to determine what hate speech is, considering it was whites who for 3 centuries used it against me and mine, and had to be shamed into stopping it, yet now feel that was a mistake in making them stop.

Other English-speaking democracies have recognized the boundary between hate speech and free speech for years. The closest we came was the old fire-in-a-crowded-theater bromide. Our development has been so slow because we have the biggest, most contentious racial divides in our peer group -- with the exception of South Africa. We also have the greatest number of rich guys making a buck off mob passion.
The good news: inflamed bigotry has done its job for the new Republican administration and has now reached the point where it is bad for business. One wonders if Trump will have any luck getting the tiger back in its cage. I rather doubt it.
Other nations have gone way, way too far in protecting people from words.
Other nations have had direct experience with the harsh reality that words kill people. That beloved conservative doctrine of American exceptionalism can be invoked to set aside the policies of "other nations" because we have yet to undergo the modern experience of civil war instigated through media propaganda of the sort that devastated Europe. Hate speech is a bad idea but it is likely to burn folks on both ends of the stick. Trump fans are celebrating the demographic chasm which they believe has given them electoral victory. This may turn out to be a short-sighted perspective. Our nation has been torn apart before and hateful rhetoric on both sides played a significant part in the tragedy. Government became irreconcilably factionalized, driven to extremist positions and disaster. Hating Muslims, calling the President's wife "an ape" and chanting "Jew - S - A" isn't going to help the country. The media jumping into the tune of calling racist, bigot, xenophobic, fascist, and killer cop has done much to encourage tearing our country apart....This is normal parts of minority and liberal rhetoric, and is oh so politically correct....One should ask if alt-right is actually the response to agitation or the original cause of it....I claim innocence and victimhood....The conflict between the victimizer and the victim is a paradox that is best settled by the hard data of body counts....Who is doing the highest rates of murders to whom ??? ...............

Privileging a sub-culture by race, as "white nationalists" wish to do, or by religion, as those who claim America was founded as a "Christian nation," or any other social or economic parameter is profoundly un-American, even anti-American.
While various colonies and provinces had such distict founding principles, the United States was explicitly established without them. This was as much for pragmatic reasons as because of the liberal principles of the Enlightenment. By the 1780s no European nation, with the possible exception of Spain -- and remembering that Italy and Germany did not yet exist -- was as heterogeneous as the British North American colonies which were attempting to unify into a single country.
Accordingly, the United States was established on philosophical principles rather than demographic categories. This was -- and still is -- a necessary fundamental principle, not because it is better than any ethnic, racial or religious alternative but because it is the only constitutional glue which can keep this place together.
So, before you sign on to an America with a "white culture" or America as a "Christian nation" you had better ask yourself if you are will to see the fifty states break apart or to see them held together as a police state, because that is the direction in which the pursuit of your goal will take us.

When the cheap labor cartel rebelled against President Lincoln, he raised an army, slaughtered one out of four military age men in rebellion, and burnt multiple cities to the ground. President Trump may need to find his General William Tecumseh Sherman. There can be no toil nor sweat for which we should be unwilling to bear.
