By Steve Holland | FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

President-elect Donald Trump laid out a U.S. military policy on Tuesday that would avoid interventions in foreign conflicts and instead focus heavily on defeating the Islamic State militancy.

In the latest stop on a "thank you" tour of states critical to his Nov. 8 election win, Trump introduced his choice for defense secretary, General James Mattis, to a large crowd in this city near the Fort Bragg military base, which has deployed soldiers to 90 countries around the world.

"We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn't be involved with," Trump said. "Instead, our focus must be on defeating terrorism and destroying ISIS, and we will."

The idea of "foreign regimes that we know nothing about," sounds a bit odd coming from a guy who thinks he is leader of the free world. Don't we have a State Department, CIA etc. that is supposed to know about foreign regimes? It seems the only one who knows nothing about them may be the new Commander-in-Chief.

How far has the vast knowledge of the CIA and State Department gotten us in the Middle East ???...I see nothing but miscalculations, embarrassing results, wasted troops lives, and utter incompetence coming from Washington DC...We remain in Afghanistan helping a puppet government, attacking the freely elected President of Syria, calling Al Qaeda our moderate rebels, kissing the hands of Saudi Princes, assassinating Kaddafi with no one to take his place, undermining Israel, and telling Russia and Iran that they have no right to do the things we do........... :oyvey

The US military is available for rent by the regime that makes the most favorable deal with the US President. From Beijing to Brussels, American alliance is up for sale.

Charles Lindbergh and Sen Robert Taft warned us.

You don't see very well.

The government in Afganistan is more of a freely elected government than Assad is in Syria.

No one called Al Qaeda moderate rebels

There was an opposition in place when Kaddafi was taken out. It later split into two competing factions (there are actually three now)

No one undermined Israel, it is as strong today as it was 10 years or 20 years ago.

Afghanistan is a bloody disaster. You wouldn't speak these lies if someone you knew had died there.

Afghanistan is not a disaster. Our "plan" early on became a disaster but once we altered our "occupation" to a supportive role for the Afghan government. Yes, there is still a civil war going on with the Taliban and like many civil wars, it is not going to end any time soon.

For a non-interventionist, he sure is appointing quite a few hawks and interventionists.

US military should get out of the Middle East
Quote:

It’s time to end US military engagements in the Middle East. Drones, special operations, CIA arms supplies, military advisers, aerial bombings — the whole nine yards. Over and done with. That might seem impossible in the face of ISIS, terrorism, Iranian ballistic missiles, and other US security interests, but a military withdrawal from the Middle East is by far the safest path for the United States and the region. That approach has instructive historical precedents.
