The OP is indignant at the use of political spin by intelligence officials appearing on TV. Well, what did we expect? Intelligence officials aren't supposed to appear, much less speak, in public. Can you imagine James Bond's boss, M, chatting on The View? The fact is that the 24-hour cable TV news cycle as created an insatiable demand for talking heads. The temptation to throw intelligence officers into the public relations maw has become irresistible. After all, if the administration (Dem or Rep, it makes no difference) doesn't put some guy on, the opposition surely will and their guy will win the spin battle by default. TV news has become the dominant source of information about government activity for citizens. Its powerful new technology is controlled by the business economics of broadcasting and is increasingly under threat from streaming media. The result is an electronic version of tabloid journalism and the yellow press. News shows have become partisan infomercials. Neither government nor the networks are able to control the results, which are not helpful to either party, much less the citizens. |
