But, Robert! Sala's main accuser, Governor Gerardo "Massa" Morales, is the typical white South American public official...

Tempers flare outside court over detained Argentine social leader
Quote:

Protesters and police clashed on Wednesday outside a courthouse in northern Argentina where a social activist is on trial for offenses including corruption, while her lawyers asked the Supreme Court to free her on human rights grounds.

Fists flew as supporters of Milagro Sala, leader of the Tupac Amaru social welfare group in Jujuy province, tried to push past police who used choke holds to keep the crowd at bay.

It was part of a series of hearings on charges ranging from intimidation to corruption. She has denied the allegations and said she is a victim of political persecution.
^^^Clarification: this specific trial is about some eggs launched against Gerardo "Massa" Morales, in 2009. The trials about the other charges didn't begin, yet.
Quote:

The case, and the international attention it has gathered, has been a headache for President Mauricio Macri as he tries to improve Argentina's image and attract foreign investment needed to help pull the country out of recession.

Argentine court convicts activist defended by UN panel
Quote:

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — An Argentine social activist whose arrest was criticized by a United Nations panel has been convicted on charges of "inciting criminal acts" during a violent protest in Jujuy province seven years ago.

Wednesday's ruling by a three-judge panel gave Milagro Sala a suspended three-year prison sentence. The 53-year-old activist was acquitted on a charge of making threats during the protest against political leaders, including then-Sen. Gerardo Morales, who is now governor of Jujuy

Activist Milagro Sala flashes the victory sign before being given a guilty verdict at a courtroom in San Salvador de Jujuy, in the northern Argentine province of Jujuy, Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016. Sala was found guilty for instigating a violent protest in which demonstrators threw eggs at Gerardo Morales, a politician who is now the governor of Jujuy, but will not serve time in jail. However, she will stay in prison where she has been since December 2015 for other causes. (AP Photo/Gianni Bulacio)

When demonstrators threw eggs at Gerardo "Massa" Morales in 2009, Milagro Sala was not there! The only witness linking the "poultry terrorism act" to Sala is René Orlando Arellano. He works for Gerardo "Massa" Morales, in the Jujuy Government!

Why do Argentine activists flash the victory sign when they are sent to jail ???...Are they afraid to starve to death if they return to the community that has little to eat ???...Is much of the country eager to go to jail to get the benefits ???...This happened in the USA during our "Great Depression"............... :shakeshead:

Eh, it happens that, in Argentina, the victory ("V") sign is a symbol of Peronism!
This interpretation is fittest, as Milagro Sala knows that she is not going to get victory -or Justice- in the Kangaroo Courts of the Macri Regime:

Argentine Indigenous Leader Milagro Sala Hit With New Sentence
Quote:

Milagro Sala, dubbed the first political prisoner of Macri's government, already received a three-year suspended prison sentence this week.
Quote:

The Jujuy court issued Sala the maximum fine of 3,870 Argentina pesos — nearly half the monthly minimum wage of 8,060 pesos — and prohibited her from participating in any civic and political organizations for three years, the same term as her suspended prison sentence.

^^^This particular "Jujuy court" is a contravention court: it is supposed to give you a fine when you park in a wrong way your car! Not to take away your civil rights!

But everything is possible now, in the Twilight Zone, Argentina.

There is a double moral/standard at work here, Robert. You are correct.

The thorn in Macri’s side
Quote:

Milagro Sala, the leader of the Túpac Amaru social organisation, was arrested after a sit-in protest and remanded in custody one year ago this week. In the final days of 2016, she was handed a suspended sentence of three years in prison on charges of inciting violence, though she remains in jail on other fraud and criminal conspiracy charges. The case, which has drawn scrutiny from international human rights groups, has become a problem for the Mauricio Macri administration — and that state of affairs looks set to continue.

Disdain that became a dilemma
Quote:

With Milagro Sala’s case, Macri faced an early wake-up call to tackle an issue he had disregarded. A year later, the Pink House moves pieces to calm the international waters.

The international calls for the release of Jujuy social leader Milagro Sala have brought Mauricio Macri face-to-face with one of his weak points at an early stage in his presidency — namely, his disdain for the world of human rights, an element underpinning Argentine democracy. In almost two decades of political career, Macri never bothered to build up any links with human rights representatives in Argentina but the arrest of Sala in Jujuy, a province where pre-democratic logic reigns, has forced the national government to deploy an emergency strategy to confront the international demands.

UN calls on government to take ‘effective measures’
‘Torture a systemic problem in local jails’
Quote:

The United Nation’s Committee against Torture (CAT) declared this week that torture remains a systemic problem in Argentina’s penitentiary system and called on the government to take more steps to effectively tackle abuses.

At an event in Geneva, the UN body released its final observations on the country’s human rights situation this week in which it recommended President Mauricio Macri’s administration take effective measures in preventing police abuse, torture and discrimination. The committee also highlighted how Argentina has yet to create a national registry that gathers torture and abuse cases from the national courts.

Thousands hold torch-lit rally for jailed activist in Argentina
Quote:

Thousands of torch-bearing protesters marched through the streets of Buenos Aires on Tuesday to demand the immediate release of jailed indigenous activist Milagro Sala. Members of the Tupac Amaru, the Argentine Workers' Central Union (CTA), the Association of State Workers (ATE) and other unions as well as human rights organizations joined the demonstration. Activists arrived at the Sheraton Hotel, where a series of Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) hearings will be held until Friday, May 26.

Sala is a leader of the Tupac Amaru neighborhood association, part of the ATE in Jujuy, and a leading figure in the Movimiento piquetero of Argentina. She was arrested on embezzlement charges on January 16, 2016, after taking part in a protest against reforms to social funding introduced by Jujuy's local government.
