Mumps hitting Arkansas' Marshallese population hard; doctors looking for a reason (excerpt) The breadth of the outbreak of mumps in Northwest Arkansas appears to be linked in part to that area's community of Marshall Islanders, the director of the state Department of Health said Monday. Meanwhile, the region's high rate of unvaccinated schoolchildren compared with the rest of the state doesn't appear to be a factor in the unusual size of the outbreak, said Nate Smith, director of the state Department of Health. Despite making up a small fraction of the region's total population, Marshall Islanders account for about 60 percent of the 2,220 people who had been infected as of Friday in the outbreak that started in August, according to figures Smith presented to the state House and Senate's committees on public health, welfare and labor during a joint meeting on Monday. By contrast, only 82 of the 1,324 school-age children who have been infected with the mumps had less than the recommended two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The 2,220 cases that have been reported in Arkansas account for more than half of the 4,258 cases that have been reported nationwide so far this year, Smith said. Full Article |

Incorrect. Thank Ronald Reagan. The agreement that allows them free passage to the mainland dates from 1986, though the Marshall Islands have been US territory since 1947. Sea level rise is causing more emigration to escape flooding and disruption of food supply. Thank the fossil fuel industry for that. |

Somehow, Japan isn't receiving any of these global warming refugees. Why is that? |

Indonesia was once Japanese colony. Somehow, Tokyo isn't overrun with Indonesian Muslims. Why is that? |

I believe it's been independent since 1986 tho it has some significant bilateral agreements with the US which allows for this migration. The Compact of Free Association ends in 2023 so some of this could be people wanting to get out while they have the opportunity. |

We used nukes on Bikini Atoll during the Cold War, leaving radioactive waste all over that part of the Marshalls and have never bothered to address(maybe by way of a free clinic) the increased incidence of cancer as a result. Your thoughts? |

Should have never done that, just like we shouldn't have abandoned George Washington's warning on entangling alliances |

Immigration is an existential threat to western civilization. Japan has none; that's why it will survive |

Oh, I'll agree that Japan is pretty tight with immigration but let's not make it seem that they have none. That's demonstrably false. My best friend from high school married a Japanese girl and lives in Tokyo... and for those who think that being black in America is bad, I'd suggest they have a chat with a Filipino in Tokyo. |
