Eleven Nobel peace prize winners have urged the UN to "end the human crisis" of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims in a letter criticising Aung San Suu Kyi.

In the open letter, the group said the government crackdown on the population amounted to "ethnic cleansing".
More than 34,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee military operations in Rakhine state, according to the UN.
Ms Suu Kyi, Myanmar's de facto leader, is accused of failing to protect the minority group.

Exclusive: More than 1,000 feared killed in Myanmar army crackdown on Rohingya - U.N. officials
Quote:

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh More than 1,000 Rohingya Muslims may have been killed in a Myanmar army crackdown, according to two senior United Nations officials dealing with refugees fleeing the violence, suggesting the death toll has been a far greater than previously reported.

The officials, from two separate UN agencies working in Bangladesh, where nearly 70,000 Rohingya have fled in recent months, said they were concerned the outside world had not fully grasped the severity of the crisis unfolding in Myanmar's Rakhine State.

'Crimes against humanity' in Myanmar - UN rapporteur
Quote:

A top UN official says "crimes against humanity" are being committed by the military and police against Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority.

The UN's special rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, was speaking as part of a joint BBC Newsnight-BBC Our World investigation.

Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been in power almost a year, declined an interview.

A spokesman for her party said the allegations were "exaggerated" and an "internal" not "international" issue.

Aung San Suu Kyi: No ethnic cleansing of Myanmar Muslim minority
Quote:

Aung San Suu Kyi has denied there is ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar, despite widespread reports of abuses.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, the Nobel peace prize winner acknowledged problems in Rakhine state, where most Rohingya people live.

But she said ethnic cleansing was "too strong" a term to use.

Rohingya flee for Bangladesh as fresh violence erupts in Myanmar
Quote:

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh/YANGON (Reuters) - About 1,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing escalating violence in Myanmar had been halted at the border with Bangladesh, Bangladeshi security officials said on Saturday, as fresh fighting erupted in Myanmar’s northwestern Rakhine state.

The death toll from attacks staged by Rohingya insurgents on Friday has climbed to 89, including 77 insurgents and 12 members of the security forces, Myanmar’s army said.

The attacks marked a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since a similar offensive last October that prompted a big military sweep beset by allegations of serious human rights abuses.

Bangladesh pushes back thousands of Rohingya fleeing Myanmar violence
Quote:

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - Bangladesh border guards on Monday moved to push back thousands of Rohingya Muslims fleeing the worst violence in Myanmar in five years, with 104 people killed and the United Nations and aid groups forced to pull out some staff.

The flight of large numbers of Muslim Rohingya and Buddhist civilians from the northern part of Myanmar’s Rakhine state was triggered by coordinated attacks by Rohingya insurgents, wielding sticks, knives and crude bombs, on 30 police posts and an army base on Friday.

The violence marks a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered in the region since October, when a similar but much smaller series of Rohingya attacks on security posts prompted a brutal military response dogged by allegations of human rights abuses.

The treatment of about 1.1 million Muslim Rohingya in mainly Buddhist Myanmar has emerged as the biggest challenge for national leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has condemned the attacks and commended the security forces.
