Celebrity chef and self-described “privileged Eastern liberal” Anthony Bourdain slammed his fellow leftist elites this week, arguing that their disdain for working-class Americans helped create “the upswell of rage and contempt” that propelled Donald Trump to the presidency.

“The utter contempt with which privileged Eastern liberals such as myself discuss red-state, gun-country, working-class America as ridiculous and morons and rubes is largely responsible for the upswell of rage and contempt and desire to pull down the temple that we’re seeing now,” Bourdain said in an interview with Reason magazine.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in gun-country, God-fearing America,” Bourdain continued. “There are a hell of a lot of nice people out there, who are doing what everyone else in this world is trying to do: the best they can to get by and take care of themselves and the people they love. When we deny them their basic humanity and legitimacy of their views, however different they may be than ours, when we mock them at every turn and treat them with contempt, we do no one any good.”
Only liberals can choose not to go down the road to widespread, systematic violence.

Leftists tend to think they know what's best for everyone and for the country.

Some do and there are plenty on the right who are the same way.

Not some on the left, but most do. I don't recall when a bunch conservatives protest in public by telling me I must accept the lifestyle of everyone and accept diversity. Otherwise I am a bigot, stereotyping, racist, and incongruent person among society.

Bourdain is correct in that progressives need to better understand the working-class and as I've said, Democrats will need to address the economic issues of the working-class to have any level of success.

Where he is wrong is there are a fair number of rubes and morons out here. I grew up in working-class, small town, Ohio. I've spent most of my life here. The people he speaks of are my friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers. It is hard to sit down with someone to find common ground when they have no interest in doing so. It is hard to have that conversation with someone who puts belief above facts and science. It is impossible to do so with someone who is more concerned where the next six-pack is coming from than who the next President of the United States is.

I will also say that unfortunately we have a similar problem with progressives that fit some of that same mold.

I work with lots of those people you mentioned. This country will doom, pray to almighty. Really?? Just because Trump is president. I can't even and don't argue with this kind. The country would be fine had Clinton won. I hear that crap almost everyday after the election.

I loved Anthony's recent review of a South Carolina Waffle House, so he really should stick to what he knows best.

Pompous leftists are dime a dozen in the Bay Area. Even the lifelong liberal James Hetfield, once called the Bay Area his home, are getting tired of these leftists elitist attitude.

That's fine. Besides, I don't normally take advice from recovering addicts anyway. But I do enjoy Anthony's show on occasion.

Both left and right have many good people, and a subsets of jerks. Certainly there are elitists in both parties who want to impose their views on everyone, however there are also genuine rubes and fools who dismiss facts and embrace nonsense when it supports their narrow worldview. My own abandonment of the GOP was driven largely by its acceptance of ignorance and bigotry when politically expedient. That's not okay, and I'm not okay with it.
