Ford chief executive Mark Fields said Tuesday the automaker was ditching its plans to open a factory in Mexico and instead expanding a Michigan plant, creating 700 more local jobs. The next wave of workers in Flat Rock will build mostly self-driving and electric cars, including a hybrid Mustang. Unlike manufacturing roles of decades past, though, the jobs will probably require computer literacy and more than a high school diploma. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/01/04/the-real-reason-ford-abandoned-its-plant-in-mexico-has-little-to-do-with-trump/?tid=pm_business_pop&utm_term=.5a5a3cedeebb |

The overused term is economics, "ceteris paribus" is a Latin phrase meaning ‘all other things remaining equal’. Thanks to NAFTA I believe cars produced in Mexico and Canada are considered domestic and can't be charged an import tariff. Trump is basically blowing smoke up a small orifice but that's not to say it's not somewhat effective. Businesses will do what's in their best economic interests but that brings into account many variables. Given Trump's pro-business posture Ford undoubtedly factored that into the equation. Shift enough small factors in favor of domestic production and there will be benefits.

Unless that translates to concrete offers of jobs for long laid off auto workers in Detroit and elsewhere in the US, I'm afraid the theory behind your benefits isn't tangible enough for them |

Trump will fix it by nullifying all Obama executive orders and nullifying NAFTA in his first year in office....It will be like erasing Obama and Clinton from the public record and history books....So much for legacy...............

Sounds like you're asking Trump to moonwalk on water? Be realistic, this has been going on for forty years. If he can stem the tide and begin to turn things around that will be a huge accomplishment. Look at the bright side, Trump is the first president, dem or repub that's promised to do something about it. Be patient, has hasn't even been sworn in yet. |

Trump promised quick fixes for all our problems. His "make your head spin" rhetoric wasn't taken literally by informed citizens, whether they supported him or not. PATruth is quite correct that even the most energetic, pro-business administration is going to take several years to get legislation passed and even longer for effects to begin to be felt in the national economy. But Tsalagi1 is also quite correct in the sense the discontented working-class guys who turned out for Trump in such large numbers and squeaked him into the White House are expecting the sort of prompt, dramatic turnaround the Trump glibly and repeatedly promised on the campaign trail. The intricacies of ACA, GATT etc. are not what interests them. They want to see more money in their pockets and pronto! They feel betrayed by both parties and smooth-talking guys in expensive suits. There isn't much slack for them to give Trump and, after his promises, they don't see any reason why they should want to cut him any slack anyway. The Republican party went into disgrace because of the Decider. Republicans survived their years in the wilderness by constant obstruction and hysterical criticism of Obama. Now they are in the saddle and have to deliver. Tweets and fake news won't cut it. |
