Popular vote is a non-issue.
Of course - because DC doesn't give a damn about what the people want.

Thanks for playing Wilmy, but go take a hike.
Blow it out your gazzoz, little man. Continuing to whine about the outcome accomplishes nothing.

Amend the Constitution, then popular vote might be relevant. Or, continue to cry about the rules after the outcome of the game.

Pathetic.

Man....we may have to start a "When Did Wilmy Get Lucidity" thread on the con board....Opinionated might get jealous....

Thus the popular will does not matter. It is not and apparently has never been truly about what *we the people* want as president, just how the system can be gamed. People don't like you? More people cast votes for the other candidate than you? That's fine, just key in on a few states, lose the popular vote, but get just enough of the EC college to win.

Yes it does - at the state level.

Talk about flipping the bird to the whole point of elections, not to mention the will of the people. I mean really, come on man, don't bulls**t. Either you believe in one person, one vote deciding an election - or you're fine with a broken system.

It is a system of states within a representative republic. In a broken system California decides every election.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I cant think of any other civilized democracy/republic/etc. in the world where the popular/peoples' vote gets superseded by the system of the elites.

Direct democracies where majorities dominate minorities is not civilized, and the you are wrong - the US is a republic.

And I say this regardless of political party (mind you, i didnt vote for clinton - i wrote in sanders - so i didnt have a dog in the fight between the two main party candidates).

But you seem to be mad that Clinton lost, just sayin'

It seems to me our election system is broken and allows for autocratic turds to assume office merely by playing the ignorant and stupid.

Its broken for other reasons, but not the ones you stated or which is relevant to this conversation.
1. And that is what I'm saying - it should also at the federal level.

2. Yet you can represent the will of the people through popular vote. I don't buy that it is impossible.

3. On the contrary - we can have the system of checks/balances with a direct democracy. Other nations do it without an electoral college.

4. Well, if I had my druthers it would not have been clinton challenging the oompa loompa. But, well, that's life.

5. What other reasons do you think?
Bitching about the rules after you lose doesn't strengthen your position here. Besides, If Trump and Hillary would have ran for President without the Electoral College (popular vote), there is no guarantee that Hilary would have beaten Trump.

Work to change the rules and try harder next time. ok?

1. And that is what I'm saying - it should also at the federal level.

Why? America is a system of independent states.

2. Yet you can represent the will of the people through popular vote. I don't buy that it is impossible.

That already happens - at the state level.

3. On the contrary - we can have the system of checks/balances with a direct democracy. Other nations do it without an electoral college.

and? Once again how does California electing a marxist every 4 years solve anything?

4. Well, if I had my druthers it would not have been clinton challenging the oompa loompa. But, well, that's life.

Bernie would have lost hard. Socialism is a failed idea. He would have been crushed in the debates just by asking "how are you going to pay for that"

5. What other reasons do you think?

That goes way beyond the scope of this thread - but rampant electoral fraud and the welfare state for starters.
1. If the states were truly independent, there would be no federal government or very little federal government (but that is a debate for another time, lol).

The states/people agreed to participate in this union, with the expectation that the popular will (ie, majority) is reflected (with respect to and consideration of the political minority) through our elections and politicians both at the state and federal (and county, city, etc.) level. So, how is it a bad thing to push toward a system where the direct popular will of the people is represented on the federal/national level?

Lets face it, the Electoral College was implemented back when there was a largely rural populace, and one cut off from the goings on in DC, etc. There was the expectation that these electoral college voters would be able to carry out the duties. Times have changed. Why do we still need it?

2. Again, why is it not possible to have this at a national level? Aside from the general stupidity across the US, what is wrong with direct election?

3. My friend, your point that one or two states may sway the election is kind of ironic. You do realize that this election wound up coming down to just a few states where the oompa loompa was able to swing them his way, and in turn win the EC. It's ironic. You're worried about one or two "left leaning" states deciding an election, and yet...in this very election the oompa loompa (your guy im assuming) swung the election by way of the EC, with just a few states. He wound up only needing to sway no more than around 100-150 thousand votes in key states and he wound up president.

4. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldnt have. *shrugs* Thing is, he didn't get a fair chance given the clinton machine. As for how to pay for it...funny, asking how to pay for things didn't hurt the oompa loompa.

5. Rampant electoral fraud? Really? Despite the many investigations, etc. .and lack of any real massive problems? ...okay, if it is rampant, then please...provide evidence. Or if you want, provide the evidence in a thread and we can discuss it.

Welfare state? Meh, whether it is broken or not is to each their own. I agree we need more work on the system, but I've no problem with my money going to help people help themselves. I think the major thing is your and my mindset - I don't buy into the idea that people on welfare are "lazy", etc. etc. I accept the fact that you can have some bad apples in the system (as with anything), but that the majority are simply economically xxxxed and are trying to survive. I say that as having been one who had to rely on welfare for a few years due to the economic mess.

Oh so it's whining is it? Funny, I thought it was having an opinion, protesting, etc. So I guess if the Dems try to stop the oompa loompa's cluster doodle it's obstructionism now, eh? Or are you taking leaf from the oompa loompas book and chastising opinions?

Anyways. I'm all for amending the constitution - but well, there needs to be support for it. Alas, I guess that requires men and women with dedication for change and cojones. Know any others that have both?

I was referring to the abuse of redistribution in order to attract voters. Its damn easy to get people to vote for you if you promise them a monetary benefit after they are elected.

In fact paying someone beforehand (bribery) to vote is illegal - whereas paying them after isn't. This breaks the voting system because some individuals become one issue voters and could care less about all the other moral hazards committed as long as they get their check on the 1st.

Why would there be investigations when this electoral fraud most likely assisted the prosecutors of the case? That said - check out O'Keefe's videos where Robert Creamer, Scott Foval and Ceaser Vargas admitted to electoral fraud on tape.

Indeed, but the problem with your 'rage against the machine', as it were, is that all parties do it. Whether it is in the promise of the redistribution of wealth directly (welfare, tax breaks, etc.), or the adjustments by way of policy and law, of the system in place, which in turn helps said groups of people they've promised.

So...it happens. I'd rather there be a system i place in case people need it.

1. Uh, actually yeah it is usually. Hence the term swing states. This last election, if i recall correctly, wound up being an exception, but generally there are a handful of states that are 'the usual suspects', and toss in a state here or there that isn't normally a swing state..and there ya go.

2. See, there we have a disagreement. You don't trust the legal system to investigate/do their job. You're assuming that every tom, richard, and harry who investigate electoral fraud is going to be biased in favor of not finding anything. Now, I'm not saying lawyers or attorneys are unbiased, look at DC, but I think you're falling into the trap of confirmation bias.

Oh, and I don't trust O'Keefe. He's already shown he lies in a number of ways to suit his agenda. He's not a "truth teller", he is a propagandist - similar to Moore.
