Buenos Aires, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) Argentinean organization ''Barrios de Pie'' (Neighborhoods on their Feet) will head today in several parts of the country a protest with the opening of soup kitchens to demand the urgent implementation of the law of Social Emergency.

More than one month since its approval in Congress, the organization has denounced that the law is yet to be enacted because it lacks the signature of President Mauricio Macri.

Argentine business leaders agree to freeze layoffs until March
Quote:

Argentine business leaders agreed on Wednesday not to lay off workers without justifiable cause until March 2017, after unemployment rose amid a prolonged recession.

They signed an agreement with Argentina's largest umbrella union after a meeting that was mediated by the federal government, which has been betting on the arrival of foreign investment to jump-start economic growth.

Federal Police attacked violently a group of workers this week occupying the AGR printing plant that belongs to Clarín Group, after the company announced it was going to be shut down. One of the demonstrators was shot with rubber bullets in his head, while the union decided to hold a 24-hour strike and take to the streets to protest. Hundreds of workers belonging to different unions yesterday rallied to the Labour Ministry to demand a solution to the conflict.

Soy grower Carlos Zucarelli looks over his farm in Argentina's bread-basket province of Buenos Aires, watching ducks float around on a shallow lake covering much of what was meant to be this year's crop area.

His and other farms in the area of Pergamino in northern Buenos Aires are still suffering from the effects of heavy December and January rains that flooded about 20 percent of their fields. Of Zucarelli's 70 hectares, 40 percent is underwater.

"It's irrecoverable because there's no time left to replant soy. It's still going to take time for this part of the farm to dry out," he said, the ducks quacking in the background.

UPDATE 2-Argentina closer to exiting recession as economy grows in November
Quote:

Jan 26 Argentina's economic activity rose 1.4 percent in November 2016 compared with the previous month, government data showed on Thursday, the second straight month-on-month gain and a sign the economy may be emerging from a year-long recession.

That also marked the largest month-on-month jump since February 2015, according to government statistics agency Indec, which also revised its October figures upward to a 0.5 percent expansion from September. Last month it had said October economic activity was flat month-on-month.

Some green shoots emerge in Argentina's recession-hit economy

It's Macri's "agrarian utopia". If the statistics focus on Big Agro, Big Oil, Big Mining, Big Finances and some specific pockets, the macro-economic numbers may be OK. But those sectors represent only a tiny elite of People. The huge majority of the Argentine population is not going to get anything of that. Only misery for them.

Argentina's Macri moves to cut labour costs, works with unions
Quote:

Argentina President Mauricio Macri is racing to cut the country's famously high labour costs in a bid to increase foreign investment, risking a confrontation with powerful unions before congressional elections later this year.

Businesses say labour costs must come down before they make investments that Macri needs to restore economic growth and improve his party's clout in congress in an October vote. But trying to make labour cheaper has brought the centre-right president eye-to-eye with tough union bosses allied with the opposition Peronist party.

"Argentina has the highest number of retired people receiving pensions in the region. And it has the best healthcare coverage. If they want to take that from us they're in for a fight," said Hector Daer, one of the three top leaders of the CGT General Labour Confederation, the country's biggest union.

Argentina's lithium carbonate production will triple by 2019, and could grow by even more if companies find financing for various projects they are prepared to launch, industry executives and a government official told Reuters.

Argentina is already the world's third largest producer, and forms part of the so-called lithium triangle with Bolivia and Chile that accounts for half the world's reserves.

Argentina: General Strike against layoffs, salary drops and labor flexibilization
Quote:

The hope that 2017 being an electoral year (legislative elections will be held in October) would mean that the government would slow down their severe adjustment policies has been shattered. More workers are being laid off, the purchase power of salary continues to drop, and labor is becoming increasingly flexible—proving that the adjustment was not a short-term but a mid-term policy. The former Argentinian president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was indicted on Tuesday in a corruption case involving public works.

Federal judge Julian Ercolini approved charges of illicit association and fraudulent administration against Fernández, and two former aides: ex-planning minister Julio de Vido and former public works secretary José López.

Also named was businessman Lázaro Báez, whose Austral Construcciones company allegedly benefited from irregular contracts.

The judge’s order froze the equivalent of up to $633m of each defendant’s assets, though it was not clear they have that much.

Thousands of Argentine teachers strike in test for Macri's government
Quote:

Thousands of teachers took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Monday, delaying the first day of school for millions of children, as part of a two-day national strike demanding a wage increase to compensate for sky-high inflation last year.

It's too much....It's too much....!

I love to comment on Argentinian stuff, but, ...but, ...where to start?

OK, I'll only do two,....2.

1) Raising price of gasoline.

Excellent! Well Done! Argentinians need to get used to paying for commodities at their actual cost of production. Why should gasoline, or natural gas, be discounted? This example of "market awareness" will make Argentina stronger in the future.

2) Teachers go on strike.

OK, like, who cares? They want, ...what, more money? Argentina is now broke, ...no money. You can paint a g'zillion cute posters, wave flags till your arms hurt or dress-up in Che caps as far as the eye can see, but it still doesn't solve the basic problem. Money. You cannot create new money out of nothing. If you do, that's called INFLATION. Look north. See what the loony Venezuelans are doing? The Bolivar is worthless as toilette paper. Crapola. See? Inflation. A TAX on EVERYONE. Versteh? Now, as to those striking teachers, go back to your schools and teach the kids about capitalism. Teach them how true wealth is created. It's your only salvation. Not socialism. Not Marxist economics. Not Cristina's whatever-the-f-she-was-doing, capitalism.
