It's not only the money. Mauricio "Panama" Macri is an Argentine oligarch. And Argentine oligarchs are born and bred for adoring the American Empire. (Before, it was the British Empire). So, this could be just "psy-ops". Because the lemons. But the need for replacing the Mirages is there. So, we will see... |

The export version of the Mig-29 is a good bird. I think they have a bunch of A-4s that they introduced in 1997 so it is probably time to add some more capable aircraft. Certainly the Mig-29 is superior to the A-4 as an air superiority fighter. Use the Migs in that roll and keep the A-4s as ground pounders. I know if I was flying an A-4 down in the dirt I would feel much better if a Mig-29 were flying combat air patrol above me. I suppose the US did not want to sell them F-16s or F-18s. Most of their aircraft are of US origin. Then again, maybe they are ticked at us politically and this is just that. I think the Mig-29 is less expensive than the export version of the F-18. I am not sure about the F-16. Edited by Demagogue, Jan 27 2017, 12:58 PM.

Leak from El Destape website. Alleged letter from Argentine Ambassador Martín Lousteau to US Congressman Pete Visclosky. Date: June 16, 2016. Basically, it is a "shopping list". It includes: 26 Bell 212 or 412, 12 AH-1 Cobra, 16 UH-60 Black Hawk, 10 CH-47 Chinook, Javelins, Strikers, Radars, M113, 2 Orion P-3C, 1 LSD, 1 LSV, 24 LVT, 24 T-6 Texan II... ...and 14 F-16 (12 sigle seater + 2 two seater). Caramba. |

Lol... I'd love to see Argentina tries again with the invasion. The Royal marines would kick them to the curb once again. |

But War is Over, because there is no moolah. The Argentine Foreign Ministry doesn't confirm or deny the existence of the "shopping list", but the Argentine Ministry of Defense says that there is no possibility of buying all that. Argentina only would buy 12 T-6 Texan II to Uncle Sam. Wikipedia says that the unit cost is US$4.272 million. So, 12x4.272=US$51.264 million. The MoD informs that the final prize of the deal is US$180 million, to repay in five years. Oh, again: caramba! The deal will include training/support/spare parts/maintenance/overhaul? What other reason could explain the difference? ![]()

with such an excellent climate Argentina has I would not work at all, maybe just planted some babanas at my dacha and would just sit under some tent at night observing the Universe and drinking beer... What all these fighters are for in Argentina, since it is not going to fight the UK over Falklands? |

If you are billionaire, you could do that. But if you are middle class, hmmmm... If all the heavy material (fighter aircrafts, tanks, attack/transport helicopters, AT missiles, landing ships) come, Argentina could be part of a "freedom crusade" against Venezuela. Of course, like a "junior partner". The "main liberator" should be the American Empire. But i see this like highly improbable. A lighter alternative: it could be for to be part of some UN Peacekeeping Mission in Africa. In the "shopping list" there is quite riot/COIN equipment. That is more traditional. It would be used for internal repression. Example: Mexico. In fact, the Argentine Security Forces are already using American weapons. These photos are from yesterday: ![]() ![]() ![]() But, whatever the destination, i'm sure that for Mauricio Macri, the eventual purchase of weapons to the US would be just a business for his personal, private benefit. Argentine oligarchs are like that. |

I mean life must be much, much cheaper in Argentina since you don't have to buy 3 different sets of clothes - for various seasons, don't have to spend much on heating, in Russia for example we have snow covering everything for 5 months a year, add to this 3 months with temperature of 0-10 Celcius. Your vegetation period is long, i.e. food must be cheap. You don't have to build thick walls and deep foundation for houses, i.e. housing must be twice cheaper. In Russia soil get frozen for depth if 140-180 cm, if you don't make a concrete basement deeper than this limit - it will be torn apart by freezing water in the soil. I mean I can't imagine how life in Argentina can be tough if you have some piece of land in some suburb to build a house and plant vegetables for example. You don't need much money to live good. Everything must be very cheap and in abundunce. I view Argentina as some paradise, regarding its climate...
