Or dare I say it?

Fake news...

This time from the Huffington Post:

Mike Pence Recognized Black History Month By Honoring A White Man

All my life growing up, I was taught that Honest Abe Lincoln freed the slaves AND I have seen listings of his quotes as an example of Republican Party values.

It would have made fine parody to make fun of the left by creating this exact headline just a few years ago. The headlines about failing to honor Jews for the Holocaust fall into the same category.

These types of headlines are actually helping Trump & Pence in approval ratings; it's like watching comedy play out.

Media types need to find a way to calm down, they are actually hurting their own cause.

What I had not realized is that Abraham Lincoln was a black man.

Yes indeed, our already horrific media has adopted a more sinister but slightly less obvious way to misrepresent the news. Here's an example, "House Republicans Vote to End Rule Stopping Coal Mining Debris From Being Dumped in Streams." There is virtually nothing in the article that describes exactly what changes were made. It's all about the headlines.

Nothing has changed except for the focal point.
Some withstand the added pressure, others don't.

We will see what kind of person this new President is as the focus on him comes clearer.

I believe it was an administration regulation passed in the last several weeks of the Obama registration. We had apparently lived moderately well without it for hundreds of years.

I'll be fair here and say that your recollection is right.
I'll also say that there is a pretty good chance that Obama passed this knowing full well that Trump or the Republican Congress would want to reverse it as soon as possible and that the reversal would be newsworthy.
The problem has been highlighted and the coal companies can continue to dump their waste in streams that become drinking water for people downstream.

"Click bait" works -- it gets clicks. Unfortunately it also feeds the fires of hyperpartisanship and outrage. The extreme (both left and right) are becoming more extreme because they are constantly being fed inflammatory nonsense.

Don't take the bait. Just ignore that crap.

If someone could make a case for significant stream pollution from coal mining I suspect we'd have already seen that study. There are significant regulations on coal mining already, it's not like this is a huge issue, just more likely Obama trying to put more nails in coal's coffin.

It isn't a huge issue where you live Jake.
It is a huge issue where coal is mined and where the mining companies dispose of the waste.

The EPA has done a decent job of reeling in some of the most aggregious offenders over the years but those efforts are soon going to come to a screeching halt under Trumps orders.

I believe that Obama knew this and Obama put the newer regulation in place to bring attention to what is almost certainly going to be a scrapping of the EPA lid on high polluting coal mining practices.

There won't be any personal issue for you. You don't live downstream of an aggressive coal mine operation. For those that do live downstrwam, they are rightfully concerned.

I think I'd like to start a new post in this forum about this, so that we can leave the discussion to clickbait.

I don't see the example given by dcbl as clickbait or sensational. It is worded to appeal to a certain group. Essentially it is true that he focused on a White man to celebrate a month meant to enlighten people to the contributions of African Americans to American society.

Digital media and advertising is all based on "clicks." More clicks equals more advertising revenues. Political ads aren't any different. Trump could step on a bug and the headline would read, "Trump Kills Innocent Animal For No Reason." Many advertisers use really hot women to get men to click, it works, I've been lured on many occasion. It's all part of the general decline in media quality.

I actually brought up the Holocaust headline to my newspaper design students. (I only have two this semester.) I was proud that one of them instantly identified it as an unfair headline and said why. In fact, she said it made her angry to see a major outlet like TIME doing that. I agreed with her.

Huffpost doesn't upset me as much because - unlike TIME - you sort of expect it to slant things. It isn't so much that the headline is problematic. It is that the entire "controversy" is fairly idiotic. Dumb controversies get written up with dumb headlines.
