It’s OK if Melania Isn’t a Traditional First Lady. But Taxpayers Shouldn’t Pay for Her Choices

What’s genuinely troubling about Melania’s abdication of the traditional duties of her office—apart from the fact that the White House, a government building, is currently closed to the public—is that her decision to stay in New York is costing taxpayers a ton of money. According to a widely reported pre-inauguration estimate, New York City was spending $1 million a day on police assigned to keeping the Trumps and Trump Tower safe.

New York City is one of the most solidly democratic cities in the country; let the progs eat cake
Skipping leg day is the equivalent of a woman having an abortion. You're ashamed of it, and it was probably unnecessary.

Just so long as you fiscally conservative folks understand that there are many tremendous and beautiful ways the Scammer in Chief will be hijacking your hard earned dollars.
A million a day? And unnecessary? A miliion here and a million there, it all adds up.

The 1 million per day is to pay wages to security people, is it not? Melania is doing her part to create jobs, is she not? What's your beef?

Melania is having the Whitehouse redecorated in white marble and gold gilt Slovenian Baroque style before she moves in....A woman's house should reflect her style....Wait for it...Wait for it................ :rotflmao:

The feds should reimburse NYC for the million bucks but I'm not concerned about the cost. This is basically a variant of the silly "Presidential travel costs a lot of money" threads I've spent eight years making fun of and I'm not going to be a hypocrite about it now by pretending it is suddenly important. It isn't. Anyway, I'm not going to fault Melania for taking the opportunity to stay as far from Donald as possible. What sane person wouldn't?

I will say that the tours should restart though and any First Lady duties that Melania doesn't want should be delegated to someone.

Agree with all of that. I'm wondering how First Ladies came to have so much responsibility to begin with. Did that all start with Nancy Reagan, or before?
