that's far from typical, but they are the kind making the most noise. Likewise there's a chunk of the right who ARE fascist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic hate mongers, but they are not "typical Republicans". The problem we have now, and the reason the country seems so divided, is that both parties are being defined by their most extreme elements. Most people are still sane, but you'd never know it watching the news.

The task of every reasonable D or R should be ignore and marginalize our radicals while upholding (or returning to) core principles. Hate and intolerance are not only unbecoming and un-American, they are ineffective. Parties have done a good job of convincing voters that the "other side" are terrible, but have been far less successful at selling themselves, hence record low approvals. Niche media pandering to a base = more polarization. People want to see positive change, not hear more about what's wrong.
