US changes its policy on Assad staying in power http://nypost.com/2017/03/31/us-changes-its-policy-on-assad-staying-in-power/ The United States’ diplomatic policy on Syria for now is no longer focused on making the war-torn country’s president, Bashar al-Assad, leave power, the US ambassador to the United Nations said on Thursday, in a departure from the Obama administration’s initial and public stance on Assad’s fate. The view of the Trump administration is also at odds with European powers, who insist Assad must step down. The shift drew a strong rebuke from at least two Republican senators. “You pick and choose your battles and when we’re looking at this, it’s about changing up priorities and our priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told a small group of reporters. “Do we think he’s a hindrance? Yes. Are we going to sit there and focus on getting him out? No,” she said. “What we are going to focus on is putting the pressure in there so that we can start to make a change in Syria.” In Ankara on Thursday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Assad’s longer-term status “will be decided by the Syrian people.” |

I'm sure Putin would agree. Now watch Trump lift sanctions against Russia by the end of summer, then travel to Moscow for a 'summit' by early fall. |

Does it make sense for Trump to be moving thousands of additional U.S. troops to the middle-east? |

It makes more sense than any plan Obama had with Syria. |

Trump is slowly moving airborne and Special Forces troops from Pope AFB located at Ft. Bragg and flying them to Syria in groups of a few hundred at a time in an attempt not to arouse the media. Trump likely wants Assad to remain in power so Putin can continue operating his naval forces out of the Syrian port of Tartus. Which is critical to Moscow's middle-eastern naval forces because it's a deep water port, and a Russian repair resupply facility. |

Leftists call for non-interventionist policy and Trump is doing exactly what they want. Why are leftists behaving like infants? |

The US made a wrong choice, having supported juhadists during "Arab spring". Now not only Russia expanded its presence in Syria, for decades in the future, having acquired 2 bases, a full scale navall obe instead of just resupply port and an aircraft one. These bases are to stay whatever happens with Syria, even if it breaks up to pieces. If not Obama support to jihadists it could never happen. Now the only chance for the US not to be kicked out of play is to suppprt one of players - the stake on jihadists failed, now the US supports kurds, which may be a substantial force but it solidifies the US role as the main destabilization factor in the MEast. Now (a NATO member )Turkey, Iraq (still ocuppied by the US ) and Syria all unite to counter the US plans to create a Kurdish state. But it's, being the worst option for the US, because it creates an anti-US alliance and pushes it to seek Russian support, but still it's the only and last chance for the US to participate in decision making in Syria. So, Trump is just correcting Obama's grave mistakes..

These evident grave mistakes would not have occurred and Syria kept in a long war if we didn't have an idiot as a Democrat President....I blame Obama for being so clueless and allying us we Al Qaeda "moderate" rebels...................

Poor Trump, however much isolationist he wants to be - he will not be allowed to concentrate on mounting domestic problems. The US created to many rivals and hot spots in last 2 decades, having thought it won Cold war and now can do whatever it wishes. If US-groomed ISIS is not destroyed - it will stabilize and starts export of islamic revolution to Saudia, Qatar and Emirates, the main US allies. Whatever the US does - having destabilized Yemen too - it created big need of Yemeni Shia in foreign support - and here Iran goes, and most rich with oil Saudi Shia Eastern provinces may become a battlefield too... Again Egypt is still a gunpowder barrel in the fire. Generally the Middle East seems to stay a giant battlefield for decades, so either the US participates in it or kicked out of the region. China will go on quietly building its island, sometimes making peace loving statements while solidifying its sovereignity over islands and expanding influence and military might. The US will run around China crying loud, sending aircraft carriers, but China can wait for decades, it will simply ignore the US while storing military might, untill the US understands it's too late. But anyway, the challenge requires a proxi war against China, this is the reason Trump is ready to invade or strike N.Korea. Mysysail, get ready to die for Americans, the US may not fight for S.Korea, but you will ![]() Again, coming civil war in Venezuela may spread to Brasil, Argentina etc if economic situation there keeps deteriorating. It will also require US involvement if it wishes to be considered as a big player in this region too. Plus Afghanistan and Iraq. Americans are going to spend much more on wars even if they elected Trump hoping to stop doing it. p.s. oh, I forgot Ukraine.... in 2-3 years our gas pipelines to China, Turkey and Germany (Nord Stream-2) will be completed. So far our cheap gas is the only thing which keeps Ukraine alive, along with IMF loans which will never be given back and lack of Russian interest in further destabilisation of Ukraine, since if gas export stops and Russian budget suffers - it may undermine Putin's popularity...

I just wonder how you view US options in Syria, what you personally would prefer (to minimize the losses) if you were a US president?

That's an easy one. The U.S. has no options in Syria, none that are worth pursuing anyway. America invasion of Iraq was the single biggest foreign policy mistake in our nation's history, it was much worse than President Eisenhower getting us involved in Vietnam, then President Johnson and Nixon lying to make sure we stay there -until America could no longer afford the war. What Bush and Cheney did in Iraq with overthrowing Saddam was and will likely remain Americans greatest foreign policy mistake in our nation's history because Saddam's death destabilized the entire region. Now Trump, in his infinite wisdom, wishes to compound Bush's mistake by thinking he can stabilize the middle-east by advancing Russian interests. Obama was elected president because he was the political opposite of Bush, and he voted against in invasion of Iraq, these two facts alone propelled him to the presidency. America wants out of the middle-east, but apparently, Trump has other ideas. And he too is making a huge mistake, that he will live to regret. |

ISIS will be crushed and disorganized before the end of Trumps first term, then Trump can get out of the Middle East because the USA will be energy independent and an exporter.......

Leave Assad alone! The US needs to work with the Syrian government and Russia, to exterminate ISIS/AlQaeda...(pick your flavor) from Syria. Pull our troops home. I believe this is what Trump is going to do. Edited by Robertr2000, Apr 2 2017, 02:08 PM.
