I'm not on either side. I'm on the sidelines. I think the Arabs are struggling towards the creation of a great Arab state, a little as the Chinese did in the last century. I think we ought to get the hell out and restrict our influence to economic and cultural stuff. I spent a year fighting a war and decided it sucks. Didn't accomplish a damn thing either. |

What else did you expect ISIS to say? "Hey, yeah....so next time you read our comments, do it nicely? Oh yeah and we're total fanboys of the current person in the white house..." :oyvey

ISIS is news. I have zero approval or support for them. What they say and how and why they say it are important in the Middle East and effect US actions. That said, even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then. In this case, ISIS has a point. Trump is a foolish idiot. My question was how this classified information leaked out of the White House. Nobody is supposed to know. |

Trump has sophistication. He has lived his life on the upper east side, dined regularly at restaurants where a meal costs more than most guys make in a week, attends the cream of concerts and events and travels around the world. He has suits that cost as much as your car. He is plenty sophisticated. But he's an idiot. I don't need ISIS to tell me that. It's public knowledge. |

Gatorman is not angry, certainly he is not concerned with some kids who can't understand how it is possible to agree with a statement made by ISIS about Trump while disagreeing with the policies and methods of ISIS itself. Even five-year-olds can make that distinction. Are these little trolls really that mentally disabled? I don't think so. On the other hand, they are compelled to improvise insults in order to attack posters with whom they disagree and, lacking the requisite knowledge and skills, must fall back on pasted emoticons, memes and infantile outbursts. It's just the way things work on this site. That the Internet has given the intellectually impotent a giant, new megaphone is a fact of modern life. That Russia has figured out a way to use that megaphone to subvert our government and disrupt our society is a real crisis. ISIS has learned how to use that megaphone to recruit lone wolf terrorist who then murder Americans where they least suspect it, a very real danger. Our bitter little trolls are powerless themselves. Our enemies have found ways to use them for evil ends. America is going to have to do something about this. |

If I remember correctly, Aligator sees ISIS as the initial stages of an international Muslim caliphate that will unite Arabs, if not all Muslims....You can hardly mask your glee over that prospect...Such may prove impossible because you can't have more than two Arabs in a Hookah café without loud arguments breaking out............... :oyvey Edited by Robert Stout, Apr 6 2017, 02:39 PM.

ISIS is hardly the first movement in the direction of Pan-Arab nationalism. ISIS is a bunch of crazy thugs when compared to Nasser and his United Arab Republic. But yes, I do think the broad common purposes of the Arab people, symbolized but by no means limited to Islam, are driving the various states in the region, almost all of which are arbitrary post-colonial divisions not yet a century old, towards some form of federation or union. The notion of the Caliphate is a nod in the direction of Islam and past Arab greatness. All this is easily mocked by those who hate Arabs for one reason or another. Similar responses can be found in the attitudes towards China during most of the initial decades of unification. The clear facts are that the Arab peoples are quite unsatisfied with their current governments and relationships with the rest of the world. They have dreams of a glorious past not all that different from the irredentist and related movements which led to the formation of modern Germany and Italy. The arguments against Arab nationalism are largely colonialist, frequently bigoted -- such as the silly statement about a hookah cafe. History is not driven by that sort of drivel. |
