I'm not sure what to think about this, to be honest. If it convinces Assad to not use chemical weapons, then okay. It was probably worth the $14 million the Tomahawks cost the U.S. tax payer. But I'm doubtful that Assad has learned a lesson here, I think he'll pull out the chemical weapons card again, when it suits him.

And now our policy in Syria is shot to hell. We were working with the Russians/Assad's Syrians against ISIL. I doubt that things will continue to be so buddy-buddy. Even though we warned the Russians it was coming so they could get to safety, Putin is not likely to take kindly to our having rapped the knuckles of his client state, which is effectively what Syria is to Russia right now. So, this will have lost us any political/diplomatic gains we had made with Russia by trying to cooperate.

So where do we go from here? Trying to support "moderate" rebels who don't appear to have the slightest chance of winning and who, if they did manage to win, would probably turn out to have been secret religious extremists or would rapidly be replaced by either a military strongman or a religious extremist strongman, because seems to be pretty much what happens in the Middle East.

What have we gained from all this? Anything?
Assad didn't use Chemical Weapons.
You keep saying that but no one other than you appears to believe it.

be aware, graphic footage.
But still, really that "doctor" doesn't even try to press the syringe, as well his manipulations look horrific for a doctor and even anybody who's aware of how this procedure is done...

Let's assume for a second that Robertr2000 is correct and that the chemical weapons were from a rebel storage depot Assad's Syrian unintentionally breached.

This means that Trump has attacked Assad's Syrians before knowing, for certain, what the hell happened. Is that really what you'd prefer we believe?
Ok.... I "prefer" to believe the truth.

So, the truth is that Trump has launched an attack on a foreign nation because he simply couldn't be bothered with finding out what really happened before he reacted?

Isn't that an impeachable offense?

idk, go for it

OP, take Trump out of it for a second. What should a US President (D, R or I) have done in this case?

What I would hope they would do would be to consult with our intelligence agencies to determine how credible the reports were that Assad's Syrian forces were responsible. Once the analysis of the available information had been done and there was a high certainty that Assad's Syrian forces were responsible, then various options would be considered, each evaluated based on what the President hoped to accomplish and how likely the action being considered would be to achieve whatever that was. Of course an attack like the one Trump conducted should be one of the options considered.

The thing is this, I don't know what Trump hopes to accomplish. I doubt that this action will achieve what goal that might be. I don't think he spent very much time even weighing his options. And you're telling me that the entire basis for his acting is completely wrong to begin with.

Which makes this not only a wasted effort, but one that undermines our position with Syria and the Russians for, according to you, absolutely zero reason.

Ya, The premise that Assad gassed this town is completely wrong. He gained nothing from this, he'd won, ISIS was beaten. The "moderate rebels" (ISIS) and their backers (The US, Turkey, Israel.....) had everything to gain by staging this.

and so, it was staged and blamed on Assad. Unfortunately Trump believed it. We shall see what happens going forward.

frankly saying I personally am a little tired of this clownade, when the US for its domestic entertainment plays with fire and life of millions of people....
If I was Putin I would just launch a dozen of nuclear missiles to some Australia, as retaliation of its participation of occupation of Russia during our civil war :) , not to start WWIII immediately but to make the US behave adult and in a responsible way :)
I just wonder if Putin is as weak as I think or just waits for proper moment to teach Trump a lesson, it is an interesting question....
unfortunatelly I tend to think he's weak. anyway, either way if collision with the US intensifies he will have to either fight or will be replaced by real patriots.

That's a great idea, nuke australia.

Russia would be vaporized in less than 30 minutes.

really? how? :) unless you mean the Earth will be vaporised along with Russia :)
No, frankly saying kangaroo do not deserve such fate, I made slightly a premature statement, if I was choosing which country to nuke first it would be the UK, of course, then - Poland, then - the US, then - Estonia, the Western part of it of course :), then the town of Lvov in Western Ukraine... :) and only then - first all NATO capitals, to make everybody understand they are not joining a security zone but an agressive bloc which takes a price for such a stupid move. And only then - other US allies which would be stupid enough not to distance themselves from agressive US policy :) maybe Australia, who knows how smart they are over there...

Estonianman, I'm sure you must remember the poem all of us were learning in first classes of school
По улицам слона водили, как видно напоказ..
I mean even such kind people as Russians with extraodrinary patience have limits of this patience, and when it expires and retaliation becomes a matter of principle - even Australia may be pity of its alliance with the US :)
all these doggies which bark on the bear thinking they are immune from consequences of all provocations they make need just onee good slap to become a little more sober...

Putin and Trump are partners in this.
It's a stage show, like Cats or Mama Mia.
