Immigrants have moved beyond traditional destination states of California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Texas into the Southeast and the Pacific Northwest. The sudden increase in immigrants in these heretofore homogenous locations has cause the blowback being exploited by the GOP. In Middle America, native-born population has been in decline, making the immigrant population sharply more noticeable. In the South and Southwest, native population has been stable and immigrants have produced a total population increase, resulting in local level friction in areas of jobs, housing and schools.

The negative responses to immigrants, especially in communities where they have not appeared before has obscured the reality of native population aging and decline which makes immigration necessary and valuable in the national economy. These areas do not have the long-standing institutions and cultural patterns which exist in those states which have been absorbing immigrants for generations.

Cynical politicians like Trump are happy to play on fear of immigrants as part of a narrative of American decline and the need to return the golden days of yesteryear. Nativism is used to justify a police state. Republicans would rather export jobs than import workers.

I don't like labels, but I could be closely aligned with that one.

"Libertarians believe that people should be able to travel freely as long as they are peaceful. We welcome immigrants who come seeking a better life. The vast majority of immigrants are very peaceful and highly productive. Indeed, the United States is a country of immigrants, of all backgrounds and walks of life…some families have just been here for more generations than others. Newcomers bring great vitality to our society. A truly free market requires the free movement of people, not just products and ideas. Whether they are from India or Mexico, whether they have advanced degrees or very little education, immigrants have one great thing in common: they bravely left their familiar surroundings in search of a better life. Many are fleeing extreme poverty and violence and are searching for a free and safe place to try to build their lives. We respect and admire their courage and be proud that they see the United States as a place of freedom, stability, and prosperity. Of course, if someone has a record of violence, credible plans for violence, or acts violently, then Libertarians support blocking their entry, deporting, and/or prosecuting and imprisoning them, depending on the offense."

Sessions: "“For those that continue to seek improper and illegal entry into this country, be forewarned,” Sessions said in remarks prepared for delivery. “This is a new era. This is the Trump era.” He continued: “The lawlessness, the abdication of the duty to enforce our immigration laws, and the catch and release practices of old are over.” A memo Sessions issued Tuesday calls for federal attorneys to consider prosecution of anyone who harbors undocumented immigrants, with a priority given to violent cases or those that involve transporting or shielding three or more undocumented immigrants. Sessions also instructed the Justice Department to pursue felony charges when applicable for immigrants who try to enter the U.S. illegally on multiple occasions. "

What's not to like!?

Those are largely contradictory positions. One restricts only violent criminals, the other criminalizes everyone, barring approval of the state, regardless of intent or behaviour. Sessions' position is statist and authoritarian.

As Trump cracks down on illegal immigrants that have lived among us peacefully we will see more and more stories in the local press of favored students at the local high school, the local athletic hero, the local beloved shop owner who has suddenly been ripped from the local society and locked up for deportation back to a country they no longer (or never) know. The people like the abstract idea of cleaning up the house but when it hits home they become much more sympathetic.

I've posted a couple of those stories from a national level but I've noticed a couple in the local paper around here. In each one the community has come together to support the "illegal".

And for every one of those you've got at least one of these...

They are almost exactly aligned.

What are you suggesting is contradictory? You did read both?

No, not even close. The LP is for free trade and open immigration, including refugees, except for individuals known to be violent or have violent intent. Sessions / Trump wants to restrict immigration, penalize trade, block refugees, and assumes all undocumented aliens to be "criminal".

Those are opposing positions, both philosophically and practically. One lets people move freely and gives amnesty to non-violent "illegals" (which is most) the other deports or prosecutes them all.

"Crackdown" should be a clue you are not dealing with anything remotely libertarian. In principle libertarians don't even believe central government has the standing to restrict peaceful movement of people or goods.
