Last week, news broke that President Donald Trump had ordered an aircraft carrier to the Sea of Japan in a purported effort to intimidate the North Korean government — but it turns out that the carrier was actually headed in the opposite direction.

The New York Times reports that the U.S.S. Carl Vinson was sailing toward the Indian Ocean at the time the U.S. announced that it was heading to the Sea of Japan, despite the fact that Sean Spicer said on April 11 that the carrier would serve as “a huge deterrence” to North Korea.

Yes, it turned around and went in another direction. That is what the rudder is for. That is also a ship responding to a new set of orders. What is so astounding about this?

It is usually the case that when a President threatens a country with attack by an aircraft carrier, be that directly or implied, the aircraft carrier has actually already been directed to the area of operations, and not sent completely in the opposite direction. I realize this is a complicated concept for a military novice like Trump, but it really helps your threats be more effective if you can actually follow through on them.

Saber rattling. Designed to give conservatives a glimmer of hope the Trump administration will perhaps one day develop a semi-coherent foreign policy of one type or another.

Are the adults in charge yet? :dunno:

Nope. The left is angry because America is ready to lead once again. These rogue states such as Russia, China, N. Korea and Iran can flex all the muscles they want. Trump is so far successful at sending them a message.

You guys are not dealing with Obama who can be easily pushed and mocked on the international stage.
Kate Steinle was separated from her family permanently but leftists didn't seem to mind.

Does Trump have any allies on the national stage? Because, if he does, I'm not aware of any.

So if the NK missile launch had been successful the Carl Vincent would have been able to immediately do absolutely nothing, because it was several thousand miles away.

Great planning there, genius.

I love the fact that Trump's yuge powerful armada is a basic carrier group with a couple surface escorts and a sub or two. Pretty basic steaming group.

Also, what good will it be when it gets there. Are not all of its airplanes broken? Or at least that is what the generals told Congress when they were there last asking for more money.

Oh, we have allies in the US, it seems...
Let us oppose Trump together! :)
But generally speaking, it was quite wise of Trump to risk destruction of just one of US carriers... North Korea will unlikely respond with nuclear strike against US territory, it would be a suicide, but to nuke a carrier(s) in response to bombing is a perfect way to show their capabilities and to instantly make Americans sober... :)
If I was Kim I would have already conducted a nuclear test - having fired a nuclear missile to some place in Pacific ocean and detonated it. Not too remote from Japan or US carriers but in safe distance, in international waters, having warned everybody etc....

What is astounding about the incident is not the course taken by the ship, it is the course taken by the Commander-in-Chief. Apparently, Trump forgot to tell our South Korean partners that the deployment of the Vinson was merely a head fake. South Korea, with one voice, cried WTF, sending public confidence in the American alliance plunging to the bottom of the Sea of Japan.
Conservatism is a social disease
