What a story this is.

If the Labor Party were to be "wiped-out" in June's snap election, the outlook for the future of the EU will become even more tenuous. Brexit will become a fact and the rest of Europe will become envious. Even more dramatic would be a Le Pen win in France. The liberals in this country were slapped silly last November, the socialists of Europe may be staring into the headlights of a Volvo truck....

The EU would be dead, with a lot of VACANT office space in Brussels....

Just imagine what can happen over next 8 weeks, a clear conservative majority in Parliament, and Marine Le Pen as the new President of France.

Breathtaking...

awesome - I like the way things are going world-wide

we got our Brexit & the sky didn't fall - imagine that.

Yesterday's attack absolutely helped Le Pen's chances in France
Republicans sign checks on the front, democrats sign them on the back…True story!

Breathtaking indeed! Brexit + Frexit = the biggest coup for Germany since the days of Otto Von Bismarck. Mitteleuropa has done very well from the EU and is hardly enthusiastic about being left alone to face the Russian bear. Germany is the biggest economy and potentially the biggest power in the region. They also have a pretty good track record against the bear and a long-standing dream of hegemony.

Britain is just beginning to figure out how complicated and potentially disastrous the necessary renegotiation with Europe is going to be. France will find herself in an even worse pickle. The fantasy that the entente cordiale could just pick up the ball and go home may not work out nearly as well as when first imagined. Those German bankers are licking their chops.

Bring back the borders! Dismantle the EU...! Fire em all.

And, by the way, have you been to Germany lately, like during the last, oh, say, 40 years? The idea that Germans have " a long-standing dream of hegemony" is ridiculous. Germans are turning into the "Swedes of Europe," meek, sheep-like, groveling, hedonistic and narcissistic. Germany in a nutshell. This is a VERY different Europe today, and they are dying as a result.

Your picture of Germany today is clouded by the snarky language used. Someone so clearly angry and prejudiced about Germany and Sweden -- not to mention your snotty sarcasm in response to my post -- has no credibility as an impartial observer. I'm sorry, Mozart, I don't have any interest in a debate with someone whose arguments are so vulgar and simplistic.

To those without much knowledge of kultur, the idea of German hegemony brings to mind only twentieth century militarism. Germany represents far, far more than that, especially to that vast stretch of mittleuropa which runs from the Baltic to the Adriatic. The national anthem of the EU is a German tune by a German composer. Germany is one of the great civilizations of the West as well as one of the most powerful. It isn't going to go away because disgruntled British or French workers want to shut themselves in the closet.

There are some 80 million Germans with a GDP of almost 4 trillion dollars. Their research and manufacturing hegemony has been a reality for those nations to the east for hundreds of years. Germany has made one of the most successful economic adaptations to the new global economy. Mozart's pathetic stereotype of the German people is silly and needlessly insulting.

Mittleuropa has been a German market for centuries and German culture has been an inspiration and model for even longer. Germany is going to do what is best for Germany. If France joins Britain in exiting the EU, the remaining nations are going to calculate what each thinks is in its own best interest.

Germany is a bigger NATO ally than either France or Britain and has no desire to sever its alliance with the USA. Neither do the other nations of the EU see any advantage in cutting themselves loose from the benefits of EU membership or NATO membership. The history of little countries on the border of Russia isn't a jolly one. The USA isn't going to abandon Europe just because French and British voters are in a sulk. They will be back in less than a decade because there isn't anything out there for them.

The EU is the eventual result of the "United Europe" that Hitler initiated....With German dominance, the EU doesn't need Britain and France to survive...........

This is a fascinating story.

The Tories are going to cream the Labour Party. What happened to all those opposed to Brexit? Could it be that the people figured-out that this was the right way to go in the first place?

PM May's lead falls to 3 percentage points, YouGov poll shows a week before UK election
Quote:

British Prime Minister Theresa May's gamble on a snap election was under question on Thursday after a YouGov opinion poll showed her Conservative party's lead had fallen to a fresh low of 3 percentage points just a week before voting begins.

A failure to win the June 8 election with a large majority would weaken May just as formal Brexit talks are due to begin while the loss of her majority in parliament would pitch British politics into turmoil.

In the strongest signal yet that the election is much closer than previously thought, May's lead has collapsed from 24 points since she surprised both rivals and financial markets on April 18 by calling the election, YouGov data showed. Opposition Labour polled 39 percent against the Conservatives' 42 percent.
