Pope Francis has praised scientists working on treatments for genetic diseases, but condemned any use of human embryos in medical research.
The controversial topic was brought up at a Vatican event on Thursday aimed at raising awareness of Huntington's disease, an incurable genetic disorder.
'I encourage you to carry out (your work) in ways that do not contribute to nourishing the 'throwaway culture' that sometimes creeps into the world of scientific research,' he said.

A perfect example of an ill-educated Pope. Here he is, just two days ago, condemning the destruction of human embryos, yet very reluctant to issue statements against the use of abortions around the world for population control, especially late-term abortions. A few years earlier Pope John Paul II made this his lifetime cause. He, Pope Francis, is suppose to be the "moral leader" of Catholicism. If you're going to condemn the destruction of "human embryos" during genetic research (which I VERY much support), you should be "barking mad" when it comes to abortions. He's not. He's just weird.....

So, why is this Pope a fool? ...ill-educated and one of the strangest Pontiff's in modern Vatican history?

Here he is, a few years back, welcoming a slobbering imbecile to the Vatican. Maduro used this visit to solidify his "bonafides" to the largely Catholic population of Venezuela. It was a stupid idea on the part of the Pope. Would the Pope have "welcomed" a Pinochet to the Vatican? Of course not. But, ...but, this Pope did give the idiot Maduro legitimacy by allowing this revolting meeting to take place, Now people are suffering all over Venezuela, by the millions. Maduro has turned loose the "Collectivos" and has them plunging into protesters with guns and knives. It's disgusting. It's vile. It is something the fascist would do. It is something that Stalin DID do.

Has THIS Pope raised his voice against Maduron as a result? Pointed to the killings in the streets of Caracas? Raised his voice on the matter?

No.

More importantly, is not THIS Pope partially responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Venezuelans? Hmmm?

I'm afraid your bigoted ignorance marks you as a mere troll -- something like PATruth with a high school diploma. May I recommend the biography of Jorge Bergoglio by Elisabetta Piqué -- it is made up of memories and anecdotes by people who knew the man at various stages of his life and is not overburdened by editorial judgements.

You have a wild hatred of liberals and progressives, not to say socialists which you enjoy expressing in vituperation. This approach never convinces anyone who does not share your views and makes you seem much less thoughtful and knowledgeable than I suspect you really are. Is it really so important to you to indulge in exaggerated slander of a man widely respected by those who do not share his faith? Wolfgang Amadeus would be ashamed of you.
There is no hatred here, just incredulity.

This is a very strange Pope, unsure of himself on the world stage and generally inept in dealing with tyrants. Yup, John Paul II visited Castro, but, but, he had a clear understanding with whom he was dealing with. He knew what "communism" was all about having been raised in Poland after the war years. Pope Francis, clearly, does not.

As the Miami Herald notes above, this Pope has already caused an enormous amount of damage and suffering by inserting himself in South American politics. If you don't know what you're doing, stay out of he kitchen. Those kids tossing back the tear gas canisters only want one thing, new elections. The blithering idiot Maduro would lose in a land slide, and be tried in a court of law for criminal acts.

It is not the Miami Herald noting it above, it is a columnist that appeared in the Herald along with 60 other papers. It is an opinion piece.

While Andres has an impressive resume, he is a journalist writing an opinion column. Useful? Yes, but still a personal opinion and not the voice of the paper.

In the last century, the papacy was the world's most steadfast enemy of Communism. That danger is past and Pope Francis is leading the defense against the new alt-right fascism which is the current threat to working people and the poor. The alt-right trolls trying to attack Francis with their usual fake news smears are wasting their time. They have a better shot at tipping over the Washington Monument by pissing on it.

The problem today is that journalism is no longer a search for the truth, but merely another opinion piece, or advocacy journalism.

"Pope Francis, get out of Venezuela. You’re only making things worse."

Miami Herald.

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/news-columns-blogs/andres-oppenheimer/article131449369.html
So, Andrés Oppenheimer demands three things:

"First, the Venezuelan opposition and the Vatican should officially announce that the current mediation is over. They should officially declare Venezuela a dictatorship because Maduro has broken the rule of law, especially since he stripped away all major powers from the National Assembly after the opposition won the Dec. 6, 2015, elections by a landslide.

Second, the opposition-majority Venezuelan National Assembly should officially request the OAS to activate the Democratic Charter to impose regional diplomatic sanctions on the Maduro regime. For that to happen, the OAS needs the votes of a majority of Latin American and Caribbean nations.

Third, President Donald Trump must stop insulting Mexico, and by extension all of Latin America, in order to get most countries in the region to vote for diplomatic sanctions under the OAS Democratic Charter. Otherwise, Maduro will portray himself as the victim of a U.S. plot, and most countries will not want to be seen as allies of a U.S. president who despises the region."

But:

A Prime Minister Appeals To His Colleagues In The OAS; It’s ‘Off-Message’ For The Media
Quote:

A letter from the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, an island nation located in the Southern Caribbean, provides a stellar example of the wide gulf between the way the U.S. government and allied media present many issues of international importance, and the way they are seen in most of the world.

In the letter, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves appeals to fellow heads of state of the 14 CARICOM nations not to let the Organization of American States (OAS) be hijacked by Washington and used for purposes of “regime change” that violate the OAS charter.

That is the plan: to scuttle the Vatican mediation and using the OAS for promoting an agenda of Regime Change in Venezuela.

This has almost become a non-event. Lovely photo's and meaningless chatter. Boring.

How about a joint statement from the Pope and the US government?

"We the undersigned demand that free elections take place in Venezuela within 2 months or risk having the Pope condemn the PSUV to eternal damnation!"

Posts on this thread reveal nothing about Pope Francis but a good deal of ignorance about Communism and Catholic teaching. Communism is a sort of totalitarian socialist dictatorship. The Church has for a century, opposed Communism for its totalitarian suppression of religion and violation of human rights. The Catholic Church has no canonical opposition to either socialism or capitalism. Christianity is not an economic theory.

The Catholic Church has a rather well elaborated social teaching which is rooted in the New Testament. How religious doctrines like the Shema and the statements by Jesus about charity and the poor should guide social policy has been consistent over the years. How those policies connect to the structure of government is a question on which the Church's teachings have varied over the centuries.

Catholic response to contemporary global economic conditions has been driven by a need to find appropriate policy expression for unchanging social and moral values. As global capitalism has swept over the post-colonial world on various continents, the Church has increasingly turned to the left for fulfillment of its belief-driven goals. In Latin America, this shift in social policy has been led by the Jesuit order. To conclude from this well-known history that Pope Francis is a Communist is just plain stupid.

The Catholic Church's version of the "social gospel" arose from the need to get more nickels and dimes in the collection plate from large numbers of ignorant peasants who were abandoning faith for socialist politics....I think the Church would do better if they encouraged drug cartels to be faithful Catholics..............

https://www.yahoo.com/news/pope-shakes-vatican-replacing-conservative-doctrinal-chief-125031115.html

Quote:

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In a major shake up of the Vatican's administration on Saturday, Pope Francis replaced Catholicism's top theologian, a conservative German cardinal who has been at odds with the pontiff's vision of a more inclusive Church.

A brief Vatican statement said Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Mueller's five-year mandate as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a key department charged with defending Catholic doctrine, would not be renewed.

Mueller, 69, who was appointed by former Pope Benedict in 2012, will be succeeded by the department's number two, Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer.

Ladaria, a 73-year-old Spaniard who, like the Argentine pope is a member of the Jesuit order, is said by those who know him to be a soft-spoken person who shuns the limelight. Mueller, by contrast, often appears in the media.

"They speak the same language and Ladaria is someone who is meek. He does not agitate the pope and does not threaten him," said a priest who works in the Vatican and knows both Mueller and Ladaria, asking not to be named.

Politics? In the Vatican?

Mueller, a German, being replaced by Ladaria who is an "older" Spaniard.

Amazing stuff.
