They weren't "caught in ice" but didn't want to risk steaming into the unusually early and massive breakup, which would normally be frozen solid in the high arctic for another month. Ironically, in a thread last month, you quoted some blogger who claimed ice wasn't being exported the way it used to be. The opposite is true. The Nares Strait opened 5-6 weeks early than usual, and thick multi-year ice that normally stays in the Lincoln Sea and north of Greenland is being flushed into Baffin Bay and the Atlantic. Calving of Greenland glaciers adds icebergs to the mix. Old ice is also moving through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, as it's now melted and broken into small enough chunks to pass, which used to be impossible, especially this early in the melt season. We'll likely see the northwest passage and northern sea routes open again this summer.

Expedition to study global warming halted because of thick sea ice. |

Because thick sea ice is breaking up, as I explained above. |

Don't even try. He has no interest in learning or understanding. He "knows" his beliefs are true an no matter what is explained to him it will not change anything. |

Or, more likely, willful ignorance and simple stupidity ... certitude and conviction that prevent education are stupid, NOT powerful tools ... on the other hand, they CAN be fuel for repeating oneself like a demented parrot, spouting the same idiocy over and over, much like you and Japan ... |

Learning, according to you is follow the consensus. The people who can use learning are leftists like yourself and Wilmy. Figure out why you lost when the odds were stacked against Trump with a near zero chance of winning. Get back to me when you have an answer besides anonymous sources excuse. |

Breaking! The Earth is not only 6,000 years old, Jesus didn't dance with dinosaurs and.... grip yourself here, Mozzie, this is going to shake you... the world isn't flat!!! Oh yeah and global warming exists and is coming to bite your sorry arse - deal with it. ;-) Cheers Hughmac Edited by Hughmac, Jun 18 2017, 02:16 AM.

Why can't god-bothering Americans get it into their heads that global warming will trigger an ice age? Clue: North West Scotland has palm trees which is on the same latitude as the north of Canada. Another clue: salt water is heavier than fresh water. Last clue: ocean whims. Cheers Hughmac |

Dear God in heaven, say it isn't so...! We have a new global warmer on board! Hughmac has drunk the Kool-Aid, passed-out in the bushes next to the serving table and is waiting for his 'warming' to begin. The heat is on, ......! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiuBWPKHTPA&t=333s Mozart |

"The Arctic's record-warm winter has allowed thousands of square miles of sea ice off Alaska to melt more than a month early, leaving the shoreline vulnerable to waves and exposing dark ocean water to absorb more heat from the sun. The loss of ice in the Chukchi Sea will boost the regional temperature and could increase precipitation over nearby land, said Alaska-based climate scientist Rick Thoman. As of May 24, the ice cover on the Chukchi Sea had melted away from the shore along a 300 mile stretch, from Point Hope all the way to Barrow, the northernmost town in the United States. Satellite and radar data show the ice-free area totaled about 54,000 square miles. The huge area of open water off the coast is something you would normally see in early July" https://insideclimatenews.org/news/25052017/arctic-sea-ice-disappearing-alaska-climate-change-warm-winter-chukchi-sea Edited by nNeo, Jun 18 2017, 08:27 PM.

What, wait a minute here... Could the Libs be pulling our legs again? Massive ice sheets in Greenland, and growing, and we're to believe the nonsense that the Arctic will be ice free by mid 2020? ..... https://www.iceagenow.info/greenland-ice-sheet-growing-record-rate/ ![]()

This is at least the third time WAM has posted that story, after having been corrected. The blogger is an imbecile who appears not to understand what he's actually posting, or does but wants to mislead gullible readers. It's a graph of surface mass only, which doesn't include calving or bottom melt Greenland is hugely losing net ice, not growing. Snowfall has picked up slightly because the surrounding ocean is warmer and more open, providing more moist air to precipitate, but bottom melt and glacial output have increased more. ![]() http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/report-card-2016/artmid/5022/articleid/277/greenland-ice-sheet Edited by nNeo, Jun 18 2017, 09:03 PM.

Here's some Greenland ice. It's now in Newfoundland, melting. Needless to say, running into it with a ship would be unpleasant.
