Remember when we wrote about how people just assume that artists should work for exposure? Well, turns out some people assume the same about programmers. Recently, Zach Zundel was asked to do coding/backend work for free and he was not happy about it. “Lmao sorry friendaloo but if you want me to write you a couple thousand lines of code you get to profit from forever it’s gonna cost you,” Zach tweeted. In fact, not only was he asked to do ~40 hours of work for free, but the person asking for his work got angry when Zach didn’t agree! Zach posted his conversation on Twitter and it has gone viral since, with over 15k retweets and 48k likes. Check it out below! http://www.boredpanda.com/free-app-coding-programmer-working-for-exposure-akalance-zach/ |

I think the programmer may have been somewhat short sighted in his decision. On the one hand he was probably right about working for 'exposure', however the client did mention stock options as well. That's something that the programmer should have explored with the client. To summarily reject the client's suggestion shows poor business acumen. Wage mentality? |

Could be. My current situation began with some occasional piecework with no promise of anything but the possibility of more. 10 years later, I'm still here and all but running the joint, making a comfortable living. Ya never know. |

My old man used to say...Most people are too busy makin a livin to ever get rich. He would go on to say that opportunities don't always look like opportunities. So I wouldn't call this guy's response "Brilliant". I'd call it ignorant and short sighted. That whole "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" thing is bullsh!t. Perhaps I spent 6 months working on spec for a videogame venture..tons of hours, hundreds of drawings, graphics, storyboards, and nothing came of it other than a cringeworthy proof of concept video. On the other hand, I passed something up a few years earlier that if I had played it correctly, could have gotten me established as an illustrator and some money in the long run And it would have been work that I enjoyed. The thing with this client was his reaction..he didn't try to negotiate a lower price with stock options..he really didn't sell it very well..if this guy cannot sell a designer..how is he going to sell to the masses?..he came of as having a sense of entitlement just because he has a "good idea" Web designers.developers deal with this crap a lot..maybe one in a hundred of these offers are bona fide but most are BS |

Well Tik, ya know...Ya gotta kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince. Not to offend you here, but 6 months in my line is diddly squat. My "products" are years in development. So understand that this guy's unwillingness to invest 40 hours seems short sighted. I've been burned on 'gratis' work myself. Spain, Greece, Turkey, India, and more recently Pakistan. None of those ventures worked out. But the few that did work out more than made up for all of the failures. My point is, the programmer should have dug deeper into the mention of stock options before summarily dismissing the offer. He seized on and reacted to the most negative of the two options "exposure", rather than inquiring about the stock options. Did he screw himself? Maybe, maybe not...probably not. But it wouldn't take long to determine whether the client was serious or not. I won't defend the client in this situation but I think there's really too little information in the text to judge his salesmanship skills. And who's to say his role in the venture involves salesmanship anyway? Too little information. In my experience, I find most salesmen are pretty much assholes anyway. This dude is very short sighted....in an age where your reputation is digital the last thing you want is the fact you're a problem from day one going viral.... |
