Teen Abortions Surged In Texas After Republicans Defunded Planned Parenthood

NEW YORK ― Republicans are trying to find a way to defund Planned Parenthood as part of an overall effort to limit abortion in America. But doing so had the opposite effect in Texas, according to a new study based on research from Texas A&M University.

The study, conducted by economics professor Analisa Packham (now at Miami University), shows that in the first three years after Texas Republicans slashed the family planning budget in 2011 and shut down more than 80 women’s health clinics, the abortion rate among teenagers in the state rose 3 percent over what it would have been had the clinics remained open. After cutting Planned Parenthood out of the state’s subsidized women’s health program, then-Gov. Rick Perry (R) said his “goal” was to “ensure abortions are as rare as possible under existing law.” But the move actually interfered with an overall downward trend in abortions in Texas.

Conservatives care about this like they care about the Russian interference in our election.

They could have it both ways if they set up something that just focused on things like condoms, birth control pills, and other forms of contraception to prevent pregnancy from happening in the first place. Then they also still wouldn't have to fund places that can provide abortions. It seems like the more logical route if they want to prevent abortions and paying for them.

Contraceptives are perceived as a "liberal" thing and despite the fact that these programs yield much better results than "abstinence only" rackets,
right wing evangelicals are loathe to accept any solution that isn't theirs. I remember as a young spud when birth control pills came out and how all the holy rollers were having a cow about it. They seem to think that every time a woman has sex, she has to have to have a baby. And of course, you hear the bromide.. "woman should keep her legs closed"..you rarely if ever, hear the same people say that boys/men should keep their trousers zipped.

TBH..I doubt the sincerity of a lot of these "pro life" christians. All too often, some conservative bible thumper will yammer on about the sanctity of life and then turn around and urge the bombing or nuking of middle eastern countries. I think for many, it gives them something to floss how "down with Jesus" they are and contrive that they are on some higher moral plane than us godless heathens. They can protest at PP clinics and parade around, showing everyone how godly they are. For shysty ministers and TV evangelist, it's one of the levers they use to get their flocks to bankroll their McMansions and private jets.

An irresponsible and short sighted cut that only an idiot of an administration could think is a good idea.

I wonder why he didn't sign this one and parade it around like a ring girl while saying "With this legislation I am axing grants for teen pregnancy prevention and research at dozens of institutions across the country."
