G.O.P. Support for Trump Is Starting to Crack

Again and again over the past year, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan have had to decide what kind of behavior they are willing to tolerate from Donald Trump. Again and again, McConnell and Ryan have bowed down to Trump.
...
But don’t be fooled: Republican support for the president has started to crack.

Below the leadership level, Republicans are defying Trump more often, and McConnell and Ryan aren’t always standing in their way. You can see this defiance in the bipartisan Senate investigation of the Russia scandal. You can see it in the deal on Russian sanctions. And you can see it in the Senate’s failure, so far at least, to pass a health care bill.

GOP donations are at record levels - if you think it is because of McCain and McConnell, then you are lying to yourself.

Here is what is happening -

The GOP is embracing the paradigm shift and phasing out neoconservatives.

The DNC on the other hand still supports the old guard, the Pelosi, Waters, Schumer - millionaires that pretend to care about the rust belt.

and with that will fade into irrelevancy.

I'm not lying to myself and I certainly don't need you to do it for me. The OP cites congressional support, not fund raising.

Read the first sentence - people do not support the old guard in the GOP.

That they are distancing themselves is a good thing - the DNC should take note and do the same.

They've been helping the democrats for months on Russia.

Trump should crack the republicans.

GOP support may crack but not Trump supporters. If these GOP members are smarter and want to retain their seats, better start rowing the USS Trump.

That ^^^ is an interesting perspective. Can the conservative-estaablishment coalition in the GOP hold together? If the party splits, it is hard to see how that would help stave off a Democratic landslide. It is tough keeping the coalition together over issues like ACA and tax reform without the millstone of Trump around the neck of the party. Pence is plenty conservative enough, whether he has the pizazz to keep Trump voters happy is another question.

What's new; Trump never had Congressional support from the day he announced.

Not really. When the people last spoke, three million more of them said "Hillary" than said "Trump." Now Trump is the least popular president with the poorest job performance in modern US history. Lets not stray from the facts.

We have had three other Presidents elected with a popular minority and none of them have been very successful. Trump has the weakest record of any of them, including Rutherford B. Hayes. The congressional Republicans have kept him alive politically because he caved in to their demands and abandoned his own platform. The wall is gone, the tariffs are gone, and he has abandoned his promises on healthcare. You can argue whether Putin controls him but there is no doubt that Ryan controls him. Trump is now a hollow shell, kept in office because it helps the GOP. He is pushing the limits of what even guys like Ryan and McConnell can afford to put up with. If he doesn't settle down and follow orders, his ass will be impeached before the new year.

The wall and immigration in general have made splendid progress. The Democratic strategy of demoralizing Trump voters by telling them the perfect is the enemy of the good will fail.
