KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Taliban fighters killed 26 soldiers and wounded 13 others in an attack on an army base in the southern province of Kandahar, the defense ministry said on Wednesday, as heavy fighting raged across the country.

Afghan forces lose 2,531 killed from Jan 1-May 8 says report

KABUL(Reuters) - A total of 2,531 Afghan security forces were killed and 4,238 wounded in the first four months of the year, according to figures released in a report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan, a U.S. Congressional watchdog.

The figures, from Jan. 1-May 8, were provided to U.S. military authorities by the Afghan government and were consistent with figures from the same period last year, the report said.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - One U.S. soldier was killed and around 20 U.S. and Afghan troops were wounded during a push against Islamic State fighters in Afghanistan, officials said on Thursday, as Washington wrestled with a months-long debate about the 16-year-old war.

The incident late on Wednesday in Nangarhar province came as several Pentagon officials visited Afghanistan, including Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and the top generals of the Army and Air Force.

Dozens killed, wounded by car bomb in Afghan province
