President Donald Trump will discuss the "path forward" in Afghanistan in a speech on Monday night, the White House said in a statement Sunday.

The speech, to be delivered at the Fort Myer military base in Arlington, Virginia, at 9 p.m. ET, will "provide an update on the path forward for America’s engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia," the statement said.

The address comes after a lengthy strategy review in which White House and Pentagon officials mulled a more aggressive role for the American military in Afghanistan.

The victor, the spoils? Trump eyes Afghanistan's elusive mineral riches
Quote:

KABUL (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is eyeing Afghanistan's mineral wealth to help pay for a 16-year war and reconstruction efforts that have already cost $117 billion. Investors who have studied the country, one of the world's most dangerous, say that is a pipe dream.

Trump demands "wins". He won't settle for anything less than something he can label a "win". So I predict he will dump additional troops in Afghanistan under the delusion that there is a "win" to be had there. And more Americans will die because our leadership is too stupid to cut our losses and leave Afghanistan to the Afghans.

The Trump "surge" may involve the for-profit army to be raised by Mrs. DeVos' brother and the appointment of a "viceroy" reporting directly to POTUS. Privatizing the Afghan war has been under discussion for some time. Baghram air base will be renamed Fort Trump. It may be a new page in American history.

If you haven't won a military victory in sixteen years, it's time to accept that there is no military victory to be had.

Afghanistan is not a nation anymore, but rather a loose collection of tribal states. It's always been known as the graveyard of empires

Anyone who tries to hold the illusion that it can be unified under one government will always see that to be elusive

It took the Taliban years to push out the Kabul government propped up by the Russians, but only took a few weeks for them to get kicked out of power in 2002. Seizing power there is easy, making it work is next to impossible

We'd be better off letting the Taliban take over again, then kick their asses out....again

Let's not sell our military short on Afghanistan. They have won more military victories than you can count. What we haven't been able to win is the minds and hearts of the Afghan people. No force on earth -- and certainly not the Taliban insurgents who haven't got airpower or significant armor -- can stand up to the US military. They have done their job on the battlefield and a lot more. What they can't do, and which nobody else has ever managed either, is to create a strong central government in support of non-Muslim invaders. No big surprise there.

That seems like splitting hairs. Yes, the U.S. military has won numerous military victories in Afghanistan, all of which amount to next to nothing because the Taliban just falls back across the border into Pakistan and the surrounding mountains, where it is pretty much impossible to pry them out, and just waits for U.S. troops to fall back and leave control of the recaptured territory to local forces. And then they come back out of the mountains and kick the crap out of the local forces, most of which don't have any education to speak of, aren't from the area they're "protecting", and who may have been trained by U.S. troops, but who have little in the way of real loyalty to their leadership in Kabul and certainly not enough to really risk their lives if they don't have to.

Expecting the Afghan government to stand on its own without being propped up by the U.S. military seems to be a fantasy born, perhaps, in to much imbibing in Afghanistan's primary illicit agricultural export.

oh, what a surprise, it just can't be that a US president, who has so many problems at home suddenly decides not to start another war ro distract US public's attention as all other US presidents do but quite the opposite, to withdraw...

It would change my opinion on Trump (to much better one) as both a fighter and a politician.
but for some reason I don't think it's going to happen :)

If we get out of Afghanistan, cut the military budget, and lay off half our Generals, the Pentagon may figure out how to win the next war........... :oyvey

The President will address the nation tonight on our Afghanistan strategy, which is weird because Obama said we won that a long time ago...

The US just can't afford itself to let Taliban eliminate opium production which multiplied under American occupation and which supplies opium to Russia and Europe....
Though, it's good the US stays in this swamp and spends huge money :)

Trump vows continued fight in Afghanistan; reversing stance
Quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Reversing his past calls for a speedy exit, President Donald Trump recommitted the United States to the 16-year-old war in Afghanistan, declaring U.S. troops must “fight to win.” He pointedly declined to disclose how many more troops will be dispatched to wage America’s longest war.

In a prime-time address to unveil his new Afghanistan strategy, Trump said Monday the U.S. would shift away from a “time-based” approach, instead linking its assistance to results and to cooperation from the beleaguered Afghan government, Pakistan and others. He insisted it would be a “regional” strategy that addressed the roles played by other South Asian nations — especially Pakistan’s harboring of elements of the Taliban.
Quote:

Still, Trump offered few details about how progress would be measured. Nor did he explain how his approach would differ substantively from what two presidents before him tried unsuccessfully over the past 16 years.

Although Trump insisted he would “not talk about numbers of troops” or telegraph military moves in advance, he hinted that he’d embraced the Pentagon’s proposal to boost troop numbers by nearly 4,000, augmenting the roughly 8,400 Americans there now.
