The cutting-edge interceptor aircraft, which has been under development for several years, will be able to reach space and even potentially operate without a pilot, according to the CEO of the MiG corporation working on the project.

So it is an SR-71 with weapons.

Good to know.

All jokes aside, not a horrible idea if your goal is to use it as a ballistic missile interceptor using energy weapons. The atmosphere up where the SR-71 and U-2 operate is very think which makes utilizing energy weapons somewhat more simple while increasing their range significantly.

It's a haox. The Russian propagandists at RT claim in can leave the atmosphere. Without heat shield it will burn up upon reentry. The Russians have lost a lot of cosmonauts due to their stupidity and arrogance.

The already existing interseptor MIG-31 can shoot down low flying satellites.
To operate in space, as I understand, not nesessarily means to fly in space, rather to destroy objects in space. I think it will be flying even higher and will reach farer objects than MIG-31.

The SR-71 operated at the edge of space. Using the term space does not automatically mean orbital space but many people do assume that. For example, Blue Origin's rocket get's lots of credit for being re-usable but it has never reached orbit nor carried a payload high enough that the payload could reach orbit but it is still considered a launch system that can reach space.

The USA had an anti-satellite missile system design back in the 1980's that was launched from the F-15. The F-15 was an amazing bird and it had the ability to stay in a highly efficient climb for an incredibly long time and up to around 100,000 feet. In fact, it's climb rate (which has since been eclipsed by other aircraft) was faster up to the 30,000 meter altitude than that of a Saturn V rocket. Anyway, the anti-sat missile was designed to launch from one of these aggressive climb profiles. Anyway, this was around 1984 or 1985. The actually tested on a satellite that was in an orbit of 345 miles and were able to destroy it.

Various treaties killed the program but killing objects in space from a fighter jet was possible in 1985 so it is certainly possible today.
