Thousands more Rohingya flee to border as Myanmar violence flares

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - More than 18,000 Rohingya Muslims, many sick and some with bullet wounds, have fled the worst violence to grip northwest Myanmar in at least five years, while thousands more are stuck at the Bangladesh border or scrambling to reach it.

Former loyalists lose faith in Myanmar’s democracy icon

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — As Aung San Suu Kyi launched a national struggle against decades of harsh military rule, one medical student worked tirelessly at her side, facing down gun-wielding soldiers trying to crush the surging pro-democracy movement. For her activism and loyalty, Ma Thida suffered six years of mostly solitary imprisonment and nearly died of illnesses.

Now a medical doctor, novelist and recipient of international human rights awards, Ma Thida has few kind words for the former mentor she once called “my sister who always remained in my heart.”

The criticism by Ma Thida and other formerly ardent supporters is manifold: they accuse Suu Kyi of ignoring state violence against ethnic minorities and Muslims, continuing to jail journalists and activists, cowing to Myanmar’s still-powerful generals, and failing to nurture democratic leaders who could step in when she, now 72, exits the scene. Instead, they say her government is creating a power vacuum that could be filled again by the military.

Hailed as a liberator from Myanmar’s decades-long military rule, Aung San Suu Kyi is facing new criticism for failing to protect human rights she once so passionately espoused. Defenders say she can’t risk alienating the still-powerful military. Critics wonder if she’s forsaken her democratic ideals. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe)

Myanmar Rakhine: Rohingya refugees drown amid exodus
Quote:

Bangladesh coast guards have found the bodies of at least 20 people who drowned fleeing Myanmar.

The group, from the Rohingya minority and mostly children and women, were trying to escape a recent surge of violence in Rakhine state.

The crisis erupted after Rohingya rebels attacked 30 police stations last Friday, triggering a military response.

More than 100 people, mostly insurgents, have been killed and more than 18,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled.

Bodies wash up as boat carrying Rohingya fleeing Myanmar capsizes
Quote:

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - Bangladeshi border guards on Thursday recovered the bodies of 20 Rohingya women and children whose boat capsized as they fled violence in Myanmar, an official said, amid pressure on Dhaka to shelter thousands marooned in no man’s land at the border.

Around 27,400 Rohingya Muslims have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar since Friday, three U.N. sources said, after Rohingya insurgents wielding sticks, knives and crude bombs attacked police posts and an army base in Rakhine state, leading to clashes that have killed at least 117 people.

The violence comes amid reports of Buddhist vigilantes burning Rohingya villages. Reuters reporters on Thursday saw a huge fire across the Naf River on the Myanmar side of the border.
