The Air Force’s first female enlisted pilot in its history is ready to take command of the controls.

“I was shocked, but it’s a huge honor and humbling – excited to learn about our mission here at Beale (Air Force Base),” Tech Sgt. Courtney said of her trailblazing accomplishment.

The Air Force does not release pilots’ full names for security reasons.

Courtney, a Vacaville, Calif., native who enlisted in 2005, graduated this month from the Enlisted Pilot Initial Class program alongside three others to become a RQ-4 Global Hawk drone pilot – without ever actually stepping foot inside one

Congratulations to the young lady on becoming the first enlisted female pilot.

Personally though I think the bigger story here is the shortage of officer pilots. During WWII flying sergeants were a thing that was not uncommon. In recent times though every enlisted pilot I knew of was someone who got bumped up to the rank of Warrant Officer. The enlisted ranks run the military and it is logical to use them in this capacity. Flying an aircraft does not require that you take humanities or sociology in college. It requires that you know how to fly and know the regulations associated with flying in different countries.

It will be interesting going forward if this officer pilot shortage continues.

Drone pilots. They have an abundance of drones and a shortage of pilots.

It is still a cool opportunity for the enlisted ranks. Additionally, we are not too far off from having UCAVs so you could have enlisted people flying fighter drones.

OK - First, congratulations to this young woman, great achievement.

But come on reporter ... "without ever stepping into one"? Really, it is a drone, no pilot "steps into one" there is no room for a pilot.

Her achievement is that she is enlisted ... up until recently to fly drones in the AF you had to be commissioned (officer). There have been commissioned female drone pilots for some time.

It is nice to see them opening up the ranks.

I can see Philly now "See, the AF pimping out women for combat, next thing you know they'll demand to be flying Unmanned armed drones....see how traumatized they get when their drone gets shot down.
