I think the guy is a fool trying to tough this thing out. A billionaire? Hunkering-down on a sandy-beach island with a 185 MPH hurricane barreling down? Wow.

Tonight Irma is gonna hit the lovely islands of the Turks and Caicos. I was there last December on a business trip and spent 5 days in Providenciales. The lovely place I stayed at is going to get slammed tonight, as well as those hotels lining what is considered to be (and in my opinion is) the most beautiful beach in the world!

Will the island recover? Will Richard Branson survive?

We'll know next week.

Turks and Caicos, ranked the second best beach, ...in the world! (but, that will change in the next 48 hours.... :wah: )

Keep in mind...his island is relatively tiny...about 75 acres.... it sits out in the open off of Virgin Gorda and unless they built some additions it's mostly designed to be open....perhaps he added a storm shelter/bunker but even then it would have to be built on or into the coral/limestone.....

Branson has always been a dare devil so perhaps he needs a rush....which it is....

The islands will recover, they always do....the BVI's will recover faster because they don't have a bunch of US welfare recipients dragging them down like the US Virgins and Puerto Rico.

It's odd that no one has mentioned what we lovingly called the Spanish Virgin Islands of Culebra and Vieques.... that's about 12,000 people in the direct path of Irma.

You were concerned about the beaches. The beaches mostly recover quickly. What takes much longer are the reefs and the wrecks for those that dive. The main draw in the BVI's is the Rhone but there are several others scattered throughout.

It was 6 months before there was water visibility to resume recreational scuba activities. However it will be at least a year before full tourism will return.

The fisherman and lobster folks will be hard hit.

The harbors need to be cleared of debris, sunken boats etc .....before Cruise ships can return....

Tortola BVI has one of the largest charter yacht fleets in the world but don't have the man power to properly secure and anchor down a quarter of them.

More remote islands like Anegada BVI will be leveled.

What was eerie for me afterwards was not hearing the sounds of birds. It was months before we heard a single bird.

Interesting times....

Yeah, this is bad.

I believe St. Maarten is the island with that airport runway approach over a tourist beach.

The photo's coming-in this afternoon are scary...

I dunno. I give the guy a 3 in 4 chance for survival, but there is always that 1 in 4 shot that he won't make it. Insane.

I've been told by people with experience in these matters that the period after a hurricane in these islands is even more dangerous than the hurricane itself, ....a breakdown of law and order. If you don't have a gun, ...oh boy. The cops are all too busy taking care of their own families and suddenly the whole island turns into the wild west. It's NOT a place for liberals......

Very true...it was very wild west...so bad that there was essentially Marshal law....if you were out after dark without a pass signed by the Governor you would be detained and arrested.

Couldn't find ice or water but guns and drugs were rampant....

They hung a dude in public for raping a local Frenchie girl...

Interesting times...

So, according to news reports, Branson and the boys lived! This is a huge achievement towards Branson's well-planned bucket list. How many people can say that they lived through a Category 5 hurricane? I can't, but then I'd rather undergo 4 tooth extractions in one sitting.

So, now the monster hurricane Irma is headed to my beloved Turks and Caicos. Dead-on. There is panic in the air. It should hit within the next 6 to 10 hours. I still have an exquisite all-white whelk that I picked-up on the beach there last December. Its' presence is sitting next to my keypad as I am writing this. It is the best souvenir imaginable...! A creation of nature. I spotted it just laying on the beach, just as some tourists walked right by it without noticing it or picking it up. Silly tourists. The sands along "Grace Bay," which is the beach by Provenciales, the capital, are magnificent. Incredible to see first-hand. The water is a sparkling turquoise in the sunlight. There is little seaweed in the water, and thus the beaches don't need to be cleaned every morning. What a place!

I am now wondering how many of those houses on the Turks and Caicos are about to be destroyed? Those hotels! Those condo's on the beaches? The bars, the restaurants and those lovely shops along the main drag. Will they survive? This is a catastrophe. I am hoping to go back there in December, but now I'm not so sure.

The next 12 to 24 hours will be pure hell for those living on the islands of the Turks and Caicos....

Updates later...

A little restaurant in Key Largo has as an attraction the (restored) boat used in the African Queen..
Won't be much hope in saving that I'm sure.
