Sources: ESPN heading for more painful layoffs

More bad news could be on the horizon for ESPN. Staffers at the Worldwide Leader in Sports are bracing for another possible round of layoffs late this year, multiple sources tell Sporting News.

The next round of cutbacks could come down in late November or early December, with 40-60 positions potentially being impacted, according to sources. The layoffs could hit both on-air TV/radio talent and behind-the-scenes production staffers.

"This time it won't matter if you're 'liked' or not. It's not going to be pretty," one source warned.

Fox will pick them up if they are good. ESPN's biggest problem is they have serious competition like Fox's sports networks.

Report: ESPN Will Lay Off 100 More Staffers After the Thanksgiving Holiday

[twitter=ClayTravis/status/928724823357968384]

ESPN will lay off more than 100 staffers after the Thanksgiving holidays, multiple sources tell Sports Illustrated. The layoffs, which were described by a person briefed on the plans, will hit positions across ESPN including front-facing talent on the television side, producers, executives, and digital and technology staffers. The SportsCenter franchise is expected to be hit hard--including on-air people--given the frequency of the show has lessened considerably on main network ESPN.
The network declined comment to SI on Thursday afternoon.

ESPN laid off about 300 people in October 2015 and then another 100 in April of this year, and they still haven't tossed out enough crewmen to keep the sinking ship afloat.

Too bad, instead of fixing stupid, NFL encourages the practice.

Part of a layoff can be a restructuring. They may have realized that their success lies elsewhere than Sports Center so they are adjusting staffing to recognize those changes.

I still say they have a lot more competition which is making them adjust their business model.

ESPN biggest problem is one of image or lack thereof more than anything else. Due mostly to its reliance on the profit-generating NFL who's profits are likely in decline this year as the cruel effects of CTE and the life-threatening illness it causes by repeated head trauma are better understood by fans and the media alike. If you support the NFL, you're part of the problem and not a part of the solution.

Disney can fire every race-card-playing black activist that spews their hate on ESPN, but the damage has been done. People who are tired of being called a "racist" for simply being white, or supporting veterans, or not hating police officers, have cut the cable for good.

Not in ESPN's case. The days of must see live sports are no longer must have for many people. There are too many social competitions besides just watching sports. Television channels 20 years ago, have limited channels with no streaming capability. Also with multiple sources to watch sports from all over the world, viewers feel they no longer have to be held hostage by ESPN's monopoly.

This will not be the last cut.

Thursday night football is dead. It was a dumb idea by the league.
