Senate Plan Would Raise Taxes on the Poor, a Report Says; Just in time for Christmas, Mr. Scrooge

WASHINGTON — The congressional Joint Committee on Taxation said on Thursday that the latest version of the Senate tax bill would effectively raise taxes for lower-income Americans by 2021.

An analysis by the nonpartisan committee projected that, if the Senate bill becomes law, Americans earning $30,000 a year or below would pay higher taxes beginning in 2021 than they would if the bill is not enacted. The projected increase stems from the bill’s repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s mandate that most people have health insurance, a provision that was tucked into an amended version of the legislation this week.

Quite honestly I'm at the point where I believe that for many conservatives, hurting more people is a feature, not a bug.

We now know why the GOP is pushing this bill so quickly. We are also learning why they are not allowing the CBO to score it. They are paying back their rich donors at the expense of their voting base. Once the base learns how they are going to get screwed it will be too late.

Good. The middle class can’t afford to keep paying for other people’s free healthcare. Every year the price goes up and up, with no end in sight. Soon, people will be going John Galt. Obamacar is poison.

I suggest that President Trump set up a fund that Leftists can pay into to cover poor people’s healthcare. If you are so concerned, pay into the fund with your own money instead of fleecing struggling middle class families.

You do know it's not "free" right? That the ACA is just legal justification, in point of fact, insurance carriers can still make money from the ACA, that people who partake in the ACA insurance providers pay premiums just like you and me right?

It's been an overstated and exaggerate premise for the entirety of the ACA that it's somehow, free to the people who use it....it really isn't.

Wasn’t the whole point to make it affordable for the poor?

All I know is it is impossible to live with the costs going up like this. We are serfs being squeezed.

The whole point was to make it accessible and get people covered. To that end it worked.

The next step is to work on healthcare costs. But the Right and the GOP do not want to go there so they are focusing the discussion on rolling back on the coverage.

The fact is we have paid for everyone's health care for decades whether they had insurance or not. Do we really want to go back to the days when the poor went to the ER and we picked up the bill as a pass through? We are not going to stop paying those bills.

We need to move on to the next step which is looking at why we pay more than any other developed country for our healthcare and start focusing on cost. That will be the first step to bringing health insurance costs down.

Yes, we do want to go back to those days. Because the only way to give poor people healthcare is to force others to pay for it. Or we could get the ultra rich to pay, but that will never happen.

With only half of Americans actually paying income tax, the poor should worry that their freebies may be reduced or eliminated....Higher income taxes are required for pet hamsters to be rich.......They can best afford to pay more taxes, because they pay NO income taxes now.............. :nana:

Going back to those days when the poor went to the ER and we picked up the bill as a pass through is, in the end far more costly in both money and human life. Getting the ultra rich to pay is not difficult. Everybody else has managed to provide reasonabl universal coverage at fair rates. We can certainly do it too. And we will.

Depends where you are. If you live in Maine as a family of 3 and make less than $35,735, yes, you get100% free health care.

As a Marine, with a family of 3, so did I, for the birth of my two sons, I paid $13.00 each for sheets in an Naval Hospital...your point? I didn't read the link, is that healthcare provided thru an ACA provider or something else?

The number the quoted was something along the lines of 150% below the poverty level, and this is not as I understand part of the ACA but Maine State Law correct?
