Network neutrality is on its deathbed, and Ajit Pai, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission appointed by President Trump, is about to pull the plug. Pai could release a new set of rules as early as next week, according to two sources familiar with the agency’s process—while many Americans are distracted by Thanksgiving. If enacted, his proposal would likely rescind the net neutrality rules passed by the FCC in 2015 that prevented internet providers, like Comcast and Verizon, from charging websites to reach users at faster speeds. That’s just enough time for the FCC to vote to end the open internet protections by mid-December. http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2017/11/17/trump_s_fcc_is_about_to_destroy_net_neutrality.html |

The problem with not having net neutrality is that many people get their high speed internet through their cable supplier. Cable suppliers have a business interest in getting these people to use and pay for their cable content along with internet. Right now if you get Internet only you pay the same price as if you get a "double play" cable and internet. This is their way of pushing their cable service and spreading the cost across more people. I would say if the cable companies (and the Right) do not want net neutrality then the cable companies should have to divest their internet businesses. Otherwise it is a antitrust issue. |

The Russian hacks crisis has put social media and the Internet itself on the agenda for the next Democratic administration. Whatever quibbles exist about who gets the money etc. will be swept away by the major national security issues involved in our current patchwork setup. We simply cannot allow our banking system, energy grid etc. to be accessible to governments in Russia, North Korea etc. Once the government asserts the essential security regulation on the US Internet, the other issues will be addressed from the perspective of the administration in power at the time -- most likely by Liz Warren. |

Allow me to thank you for introducing me to an entirely new experience... agreeing with you. Affordable internet service and access to information should be a govt priority. |

Your call ^^^ for a government priority is a call for tighter regulation of the electronic spectrum of communication. It is nice to see reactionaries wising up. Good luck with your crystal set. |

Major Internet providers and cable companies would be dead without government protection. |

The government would be far more generous to me if they kept their puny tax cut and gave me free internet, cable TV and phone service...........

What you're getting is a business entity restricting access to the airwaves/better streaming based on price. Like the old telecomm model, some of these guys have gotten too big, might be time to open up the field a bit, the biggest problem seems to be lack of competition. It's really the same problem with health insurance, you wonder why the govt has shown little inclination to try and fix a rather substantial problem, other than they've been bought off. |
