Republican Governors’ 2018 Dilemma: What to Do About Trump?; Republicans lose white married women

AUSTIN, Tex. — For nearly a decade, meetings of the Republican Governors Association were buoyant, even giddy, affairs, as the party — lifted by enormous political donations and a backlash against the Obama administration — achieved overwhelming control of state governments.

But a sense of foreboding hung over the group’s gathering in Austin this past week, as President Trump’s unpopularity and Republicans’ unexpectedly drastic losses in elections earlier this month in Virginia, New Jersey and suburbs from Philadelphia to Seattle raised the specter of a political reckoning in 2018.

“I do think Virginia was a wake-up call,” said Gov. Bill Haslam of Tennessee, who took over here as chairman of the governors association. “There’s a pretty strong message there. When Republicans lose white married women, that’s a strong message.”

The GOP was destroyed in the Commonwealth, but it wasn't an upset?

Voting lines were longer at 5:00 am then I had ever seen before - people were yelling "Dump Trump", and "Drain the Swamp starting with Trump", and these chants were from senior citizens. With the chants from Generation X'ers getting me a two-week timeout if post them.

Step 1) Fill-out Butthurt report form to the best of your abilities

Step 2) Post in SMAC, where a mod with training in these matters will address your concerns.

Oh, look Herb esto's butthurt is affecting his sanity again.

Probably so dear, the poor lad hasn't had a date since the Carter administration.

^^^^ Fake Optimism. We see the Trumpistas in full denial already. Denial isn't going to work when the big hammer comes down in 2018. Most of them will just shut up and drop out. A small number, perhaps 3%, will retreat to their gun closets and come out shooting. Perhaps if they kill enough innocent citizens we may begin gun control. Always a bright side

That you are portraying VA as a battleground state shows how desperate the left has become.

The days of Democratic desperation are lifting. The normal expectation after a sweep like the 2016 election would be a year or more of follow-up wins for the GOP, with the first chance for even the smallest Democratic comeback being the off-year elections of 2018. That is what most Democrats gloomily predicted and what right wingers here on P.com shouted joyfully. No one thought the Trump administration would immediately fail utterly and drag the rest of the GOP down with it, which is what seems to be happening already. The Democrats were desperate on Election Day; they can't believe their good fortune now.

Meanwhile back in reality - the approval of the democrat party is at a 25 year low. :)

and only Trump detractors that want Trump to fail - see Trump as failing. To every other rational personal Trump is winning. My evidence? Your pout bucket is almost full :)

I have my doubts that good fortune will hold. Right now, we are less than a year into Trump's Presidency. Already, we have had 2 quarters of real GDP growth above 3%- a feat Obama never managed in 8 years. *IF* (and I do mean if) that growth holds, if the workforce participation rate continues to improve, if market competition forces wages up... do you really think voters across the country will be looking at Trump and the GOP the same way they did in Virginia?

I want to respond to these two quotes from the article:

Quote:

A larger group of [Republican] governors from agricultural and auto-producing states warned Mr. Pence that Mr. Trump’s proposed withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement could damage them badly.

This is one example of letting us know the Republicans and Democrats collude to some extent. Bad trade deals—and President Barack Obama’s push for the TPP even close to the end of the general election (I lose track of some dates; the timeline)—was key to Donald Trump winning Election 2016 primarily through the Rust Belt. This quoted part tells me those “[Republican] governors from...auto-producing states” are deliberately pretending to be out of touch. And just about every Republican governor (minus Illinois’s Bruce Rauner; Pennsylvania’s governor is Democrat Tom Wolfe) is in his second term, meaning is term-limited, so it’s a joke.

Quote:

Gov. Paul LePage of Maine, a fierce supporter of Mr. Trump’s, said Republicans should “absolutely” stump with the president in 2018. “He is the leader of our country,” Mr. LePage said. “He is the leader of our country, and we should respect our leader.”

If Paul LePage had been first elected in 2014, rather than 2010, he would become unseated in his attempt to win re-election in 2018.

Just about all of the article, well, it doesn't enlighten. It reads more like p.r.

The midterm elections of 2018 are looking to become what nearly all of them have been since the 17th Amendment (direct elections of U.S. senators by the states’ voters) have been for over 100 years—a good election cycle for the White House opposition party. (Since 1914, the White House party won overall seat gains only in 1934, 1998, and 2002.)

Thank you, for posting the thread topic, George Aligator!

No. The Democratic Party will he remembered akin to the Communist party of Poland or Vichy France; a totalitarian political apparatus imposed on the natives by foreign imposition.
