A Texas university newspaper is apologizing after a student wrote an opinion piece that condemns white privilege and accuses white people of being an “aberration” that “shouldn’t exist.”

The student should be the only one accountable for that statement, not the newspaper since it was published in the Opinions section. The purpose of the Opinion section is just to show different point of views of various people, none of which reflects the views of the newspaper (which job is just to report it). Newspaper did nothing wrong.

Sorry eddo, that's just wrong. Ultimately the editorial board is responsible for the publications content. They're called editors for a reason. In this case they gave voice to overt racism.

No it doesn't.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EDITORIAL WRITING

An editorial is an article that presents the newspaper's opinion on an issue It reflects the majority vote of the editorial board, the governing body of the newspaper made up of editors and business managers.. It is usually unsigned. Much in the same manner of a lawyer, editorial writers build on an argument and try to persuade readers to think the same way they do. Editorials are meant to influence public opinion, promote critical thinking, and sometimes cause people to take action on an issue. In essence, an editorial is an opinionated news story.

No, it's an editorial, although signed, it was written by a member of the staff. Folks often confuse the 'op' in op-ed to mean opinion when actually it means 'opposite' the editorial page. It' a common misunderstanding. Hell even the RT reporter got it wrong. Op-eds are generally submissions by writers who are not affiliated with the publication. And even those are subject to editorial review and approval. This is an editorial, written by a staff member and as such should reflect the majority opinion of the editorial board. Not saying in this case that it does reflect that majority opinion....just sayin somebody at Texas State's University Star, f@cked up and let this racist screed go to print.

If that is so and it wasn't in Op-Ed column then you have a point.

Likewise eddo. Admittedly the lines are somewhat blurred in this case.
