The EU has a couple of separate ideological roots. The first envisions a union of democracies with common commitment to the modern welfare state. The second emphasizes a huge, open internal market with major economic benefits to all participants. As a matter of politics, each of those visions has been used to build support for the other. This worked splendidly from the founding days through the heady expansion of membership following the collapse of the USSR. A generation later, the cycle seems to be reversing, with dismay over one of the visions weakening support for the other. The internal freedom of labor across member boundaries has been blamed for a slowing of wage growth, provoking a revived nativism while the historical difference between the major Western powers and the new Eastern European membership have put stress of the concept of shared democratic principles. Unions aren't easy. Ours blew apart in 1860 and was repaired by military force at the cost of some 600,000 lives. The EU doesn't have that kind of central backbone. Brexit shows the union to be far from universal. Poland doesn't want to be France. How different can Poland be and still function as an integrated member of a European Union? We'll see. |

Today, the EU is trying to whip Poland and Austria into obedience...Next it will be all of southern European countries...I look in amusement at the limits of disciplinary power the EU has over sovereign member countries....The EU has a defective business model...............

Fascinating interchange between a 'far' left-wing (so-called) British journalist and spokespersons for Poland. "The safety of our people come first." It's just common sense. The anger over thoroughly ungrateful Asian/African migrants is spreading throughout eastern Europe, ...and now moving west. Anger. An underground juggernaut of resentment. The EU deal that was supposedly struck in Brussels on Saturday, and supposedly saved the loopy Merkel, is total garbage. It will never work. There NO detention centers right now, and there has been no EU money allocated to it. It's political crappola of the first water. Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will not allow any more migrants, ...period. It is spreading to Germany, Austria and Italy. It's going to become an avalanche..... Mozart |
