The whole world is watching us. On April 3rd, 2017, President Trump signed H.J. Res. 69, a joint U.S. House and Senate resolution nullifying Obama-era regulations banning the use of certain “predator control” hunting methods on the 76.8 million acres of federally-protected national preserves across Alaska. The repealed restrictions were enacted in 2016 by the Fish and Wildlife Service after years of disputes between the U.S. government and the state of Alaska over the legality of such practices as bear baiting, hunting via aircraft, killing hibernating bears, and “denning” (killing wolves, coyotes, and offspring in their dens) on or near federally protected lands. In an impassioned call to action, the Humane Society of the United States had condemned the bill, which they said ought to “shock the conscience of every animal lover in America” https://www.snopes.com/2017/04/04/house-votes-killing-hibernating-bears-alaska/ Edited by _g R_, Dec 25 2017, 10:16 AM.

If anyone ever murders a den of hibernating animals, they better not ever tell me about it. That's all I'm saying. |

Ya gotta admit though Ringo...we're both hunters...it's a dick move to kill hibernating animals. Killing from the air? The pups in their den? Edited by Tsalagi, Dec 25 2017, 10:49 AM.

If done for the sake of sport only? ... yeah, but much more humane than letting them suffer and starve to death in times when their food sources are scarce. |

I don't have an issue with having to do a seasonal hunt because the local population of whatever predator has depopulated the area game to the point it requires culling that population...but somehow I keep seeing a bunch of Alaskans with 30.06 rifles pounding away and hauling an animal away on their jeep just to have it stuffed and mounted so it can look pretty on their mantle. |

As a hunter, you understand the need for predator control. So long as these practices are monitored and controlled they serve a greater purpose for the ecology. You're probably also aware of the devastating problem we have here in Texas with feral wild hogs. The problem has become so overwhelming that they can be hunted by almost any means. It's a practical and economical matter. |

Are you deflecting from your own thread or somehow trying to connect the dots? Let me know. Most of the predator harvest will be conducted by government wildlife agents. The rest by permit under control by Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game. |

They passed both bills at the same time basically. I'd call that more than a coincidence. |

And yet wild hogs were barely more than a curiosity in the Lone Star State until the 1980s. It’s only since then that the population has exploded, and not entirely because of the animals’ intelligence, adaptability and fertility. Hunters found them challenging prey, so wild hog populations were nurtured on ranches that sold hunting leases; some captured hogs were released in other parts of the state. Game ranchers set out feed to attract deer, but wild hogs pilfered it, growing more fecund. Finally, improved animal husbandry reduced disease among domestic pigs, thereby reducing the incidence among wild hogs. Around here we blow up gophers in their dens. Seal off the exit holes, fill the den with a mixture of propane and oxygen, then ignite it.

They should be shut down. Now, what's that got to do with game management and predator control in Alaska? |
