Rising racism taints Italian electoral campaign
Quote:

VERONA, Italy (AP) — When hundreds of hardcore Verona soccer fans chanted “Adolf Hitler is my friend” and sang of their team’s embrace of the swastika, Italian Jewish communities complained, and waited.

Local officials initially dismissed the incident — which was filmed and circulated on social media by the so-called “ultras” themselves — as a “prank.” Condemnation only came several months later, after another video from the same summer party, this time profaning Christian objects, also went viral.

“These episodes should absolutely not be dismissed,” said Bruno Carmi, the head of Verona’s tiny Jewish community of about 100, speaking at the Verona synagogue, which is flanked by two armed police patrols. “In my opinion, whoever draws a simple swastika on the wall knows what it means.”

Racist and anti-Semitic expressions have been growing more bold, widespread and violent in Italy. Anti-migrant rhetoric is playing an unprecedented role in shaping the campaign for the March 4 national elections, and many say that is worsening tensions and even encouraging violence. 1. Italians never have fond feelings toward Blacks.
2. Blacks knew this but decided to poke the hornet's nest.
3. Italy isn't America. Blacks can cry racial injustice all they want. Majority of Italians don't care. If Blacks riot in Italy the same way they did in America, don't expect Italians to idle around.

Southern Italians are part black and Arab....That may be why northern Italians don't like them......... :dunno:

Italians don't even like Black soccer players playing for the Italian national team. Blacks will not gain acceptance as Italians as long as Italy remains majority Italians.

In Italy’s poorer south, populist party woos angry voters
Quote:

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — In the Naples suburb of Torre del Greco, a port town at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, voters are steaming.

Local seamen have jobs lost to foreigners willing to work for lower pay. The town is without a mayor, who was arrested months ago in a kickback scandal. Some 13,000 small investors lost their savings in the bankruptcy of a shipping company.

Those woes only aggravate the daily difficulties of life in Italy’s underdeveloped south, where youth unemployment runs 50 percent or higher, and the jobless rate among all ages is nearly double that in the relatively affluent north. It’s also an area long influenced by organized crime syndicates, where prosecutors say votes have been exchanged for guarantees of lucrative public work contracts.

A view of one of the buldings of “Le Vele di Scampia”, (the Sails of Scampia), a public housing project which for over a decate was the center for the Camorra Mafia syndicate’s drug business and which has served as a backdrop for the hit movie and TV series “Gomorrah”, in Naples, southern Italy, Monday, Feb. 12, 2018. Whichever party can convert voters’ palpable anger in the south into support in Italy’s March 4 election could very well determine who governs Italy, a few dozen southern races, including in the Campania region embracing Naples, are critical. Italians stage protests in violence-marred election campaign
Quote:

ROME (AP) — Italians demonstrated Saturday against racism, revivals of fascism, labor reforms, mandatory vaccines and other hotly-debated issues, at some points clashing with police, as antagonism flared between far-left and far-right activists in a violence-marred election campaign.

It was the last weekend for political rallies ahead of Italy’s March 4 national election, and protesters held at least a dozen marches or rallies in several Italian cities.

Police take on students opposing a neo-fascist party in Milan, Italy, Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018. Students opposing a neo-fascist party have scuffled with police in Milan at one of at least a dozen rallies being held across Italy on the last weekend for political action before the March 4 national election. Thousands of police have been deployed for protests in Rome, Milan and other Italian cities tasked with preventing clashes during an election campaign that has increasingly been marked by violence.
