Bermuda becomes first country in world to repeal same-sex marriage

Bermuda has become the first country to legalise and then repeal same-sex marriage, in what critics have called an unprecedented rollback of civil rights by the British island territory.

Bermuda’s governor has signed into law a bill reversing the right of gay couples to marry, despite a supreme court ruling last year authorising same-sex marriage.

Walton Brown, the minister of home affairs, said the legislation signed by Governor John Rankin would balance opposition to same-sex marriage on the socially conservative island while complying with European court rulings that ensure recognition and protection for same-sex couples in the territory.

Bermuda’s Senate and House of Assembly passed the legislation by wide margins in December and a majority of voters opposed same-sex marriage in a referendum.

Gay couples have civil unions with all the same benefits as marriage except the M word. The move is not surprising in Britain which has an established Church of England. It is disappointing but no big deal.

The government should get out of this marriage business.

I agree ^^^ completely. "Marriage" as the word is understood in English, is a religious term, different from "baptism" in that it conveys specific legal advantages from the state. We would be better served to let marriage be the province of rabbis, imams and bishops, where religious institutions and beliefs provide valuable support and guidance. In the civil realm, what we now call marriage should be a form of incorporation, a legal act whereby parties in contract found a civil entity called "a family" which should be eligible for subsidy as needed when its membership includes minor children.
