Are there 1,000+ different Christian Denominations?; And there are this many because of difference in interpretation of Scripture. True?

Are there 1,000+ different Christian denominations? It was suggested in one of the threads that this large number of denominations is attributable to the differences in practice, doctrine, and interpretation of Scripture. 1000+ seems like a lot. I thought the division along doctrinal and Scriptural interpretation lines is Catholic and Protestant. Of course these have their collection of 'orders' and congregations too. But still the number 1000+ sounds ridiculous.

Soli Deo gloria

Depends on how you count them.
My guess is that there are about 20 major Christian "families"/denominations.
